Not my most temperate outing to be sure ;) but hugely grateful to Genspect and the Free Speech Union for a great event in Belfast to discuss (or maybe rant in my case lol) about the NI conversion bill
“It makes looking after gay children a crime...this bill causes — and not prevents — gay conversion therapy”, says Dennis Kavanagh.
The Bill is both confusing and confused. It is framed as protecting vulnerable people from coercive attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. In reality, it risks criminalising well-intentioned conversations and imprisoning parents, teachers, therapists, religious communities and even friends.
Speaking at the Free Speech Union and Genspect’s event in Belfast on Friday, criminal barrister and co-director of the Gay Men’s Network Dennis Kavanagh highlighted that the law already rightly bans abusive conversion practices.
This Bill would create new offences that could criminalise important conversations between parents and their gender-confused children.
It will inevitably and inadvertently harm the very children it purports to protect by casting “the shadow of criminal law across your kitchen table”.

The generational discourse (younger folks don’t like ‘boomers’) is useful as a series of observations about how things are harder now for young people. College costs too much - it didn’t for boomers. Houses are too expensive in major cities where work is located. Healthcare is ridiculous.
But most boomers are not really responsible for this - they’re passive observers like everyone else. It’s more an accretion of structural problems over time. Growth of government and concentrated business working together - at the expense of the middle class. Mass immigration and H1b visas for instance - this isn’t your grandparents screwing you over. ‘Boomers’ didn’t really do this - some very powerful people did who are still in control. Both parties contributed to it - so you can’t claim it was this or that voting block by age.
Generational discourse sometimes strikes me as a distraction from the real targets.

If Mark Carney did indeed prepare for the highly unlikely event of the U.S. invading Canada (which is what an 'extreme tail risk' of such an event means) perhaps he could have informed the Canadian people of this through some method other than an interview in the New York Times.
Mark Carney tells the New York Times he had prepared for the “extreme tail risk” that Donald Trump might order military action against Canada, but disclosed the 2 have spoken “frequently,” even since trade talks collapsed in a tense, evolving relationship.

Mark Carney just sat down with the New York Times—the paper many Democrats treat as their house journal—weeks before the U.S. midterm elections
His message: Donald Trump is unpredictable and dangerous. Canada has even studied the far-out risk that the U.S. might use military force. So Ottawa is buying fewer American fighter jets, relying less on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites, talking more to China on trade, and trying to depend less on the U.S. dollar. At the same time he says he still talks to Trump and a trade deal is possible. That is useful for Democrats. Their midterm pitch is: Trump’s tariffs and fights with allies raise your prices and make America look chaotic. A respected former banker saying it from Canada makes the argument easier to sell
Who wins: U.S. Democrats trying to take Congress, future Democratic presidential hopefuls who have been meeting Carney, Carney’s image at home as the guy who stands up to Trump, and the New York Times. Ordinary Americans paying more at the store, and Canadians still selling the U.S. most of its imported oil, are not the ones getting the flattering write-up
The Times never mentions Maia Johnson. She is an American who worked on Hillary Clinton’s campaign and later around Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Carney hired her to advise on U.S. strategy, then made her chief operating officer of his own office—the most powerful staff job in Ottawa
Simple version: the article paints Carney as the calm adult managing Trump risk, and skips the fact that a U.S. Democratic campaign veteran is now helping run his government and the Trump file
Tell the New York Times: if you’re going to lecture America about reliability, say who is actually sitting in the Canadian prime minister’s office
That is a pretty serious omission @MatinaStevis @SangerNYT @tylerpager @colbyLsmith

Just incredible.
Reuters does an entire sympathetic story on this teenager who was injured but doesn’t identify his father, who they admit the beeper belonged to.
Purely by coincidence, he has the same surname as a Hezbollah Radwan Force commander who was later taken out.
Again, only Hezbollah members had the beepers. This was the most targeted large anti-terror operation in history. It’s not even close. If you object to this, then you’re basically saying that no one is allowed to actually pursue terror organizations.
But Reuters chooses to intentionally hide this context.
I don’t know how anyone can defend this type of intentional omission by a media outlet other than because they like who is being targeted by the story.

Dear California lawyers: do a good deed and help this lady out! 🙏
I need a California malpractice attorney who is sort of young and won’t charge three arms and five legs to look over and correct an Intent to Sue letter that I have to send to preserve the viability of my case.
I know that we non-lawyers are legal morons in ways we do not understand but that destroy us completely.
That said, I know quite a bit in this area so I know to get the doctors names and addresses from the medical board etc. etc. and who has to be listed. And some other stuff about how to do this.
An extremely high chance as a non-lawyer that I will get something wrong, even some tiny thing, that can get this thrown out.
I actually have quite a strong case but I need a little more time to pull it together. Just have to send this to make the date of discovery one year deadline.

THIS IS CANADA IN 2026.
A gang allegedly sends a letter TO POLICE claiming:
“We have 5,000 gang members in Canada.”
“We pay $1,000 to carry out a shooting.”
“We will take over Canada soon.”
“Everyone will have to pay a tax.”
“You can’t stop us.”
A criminal organization allegedly felt comfortable enough to put that in writing and SEND IT TO CANADIAN POLICE.
Meanwhile, CBSA says 188 removal orders have been issued in extortion-linked cases, with 111 people removed as of this month.
How did we get to the point where this is happening in Canada?

Mark Carney could not be more out of touch.
With Canadians missing meals and mortgage payments, and days before he addresses the European Parliament (instead of the Canadian Parliament) we learn in a foreign newspaper of secret talks to make Canada an "Associate Member" of the European Union.
This is not about diversifying trade: we have had tariff-free trade with Europe for over a decade. They would buy more of our goods today if the Liberal government would get out of the way and permit mines, pipelines, LNG plants to produce and ship them.
Canadians deserve answers: Is the WSJ report true about associate membership in the EU?
If so, will European border policies apply in Canada, further overwhelming our immigration system while our youth can’t find homes?
Will Canadian waitresses struggling with rent have to pay tax dollars to the bloated EU bureaucracy?
Will Canadian small businesses be buried under the red tape of Eurocrats that have never met a Canadian entrepreneur?
All questions I’d ask in Parliament, but it is shuttered.
And one more: who decides for Canada?
The Welland welder did not elect a Eurocrat to regulate our steel. The Saskatchewan farmer and the Atlantic fisherman did not choose a Brussels agrifood regulator that has never even seen our prairies or coasts.
We will NEVER be the 51st U.S. state. And we will NEVER be the 28th EU state.
We are Canadians. This is our home, our freedom, our sovereignty, our people.
Now and forever.

Twenty-five years ago, a woman stood in the hole an airliner had punched through the North Tower and waved for a hundred minutes.
She is in dozens of photographs and several video clips. People have been arguing about her for a quarter century. Her name, almost certainly, was Edna Cintrón.
She was 46. She worked as an assistant billing administrator at Marsh & McLennan, on the 97th floor.
Flight 11 hit that building at 8:46 and tore open floors 93 through 99. It went through her company. Marsh lost 295 employees and 63 consultants that morning, more than any other firm in the North Tower.
Minutes after the impact, people on the street and photographers on rooftops started noticing movement in the gash itself. A woman had made it to the torn edge of the floor slab, where the aluminum had peeled the wall open and there was outside air. She was leaning against a piece of the ruined exterior column, and she was waving her right arm.
She kept doing it.
Here is the part that is hard to sit with. Nobody was coming. All three stairwells in the North Tower were severed at impact. The roof doors were locked and the smoke made a helicopter landing impossible. Not one person at or above the 92nd floor of that building survived, 1,355 people in total, and that was already true at 8:46, before she ever reached the opening.
She had no way of knowing that. So she stood there in the wind, 1,300 feet up, and signaled for help to a city that could see her perfectly and could not reach her.
Witnesses and footage put her still there, still waving, until roughly ten seconds before the tower came down at 10:28.
She was never formally identified. Her remains were never recovered, and the identification rests on video and photographic analysis and on the people who knew her recognizing her. Her husband William believed it was her. They had been through a lot together, including a period without a home, and she had carried him through his drinking.
So the honest way to say it is this. We are nearly certain who she was, and we are completely certain what she did, which was refuse to stop asking for help for a hundred minutes on the worst morning in American history.
Her name was Edna Cintrón.
