I overlaid some of @trvrb group's analysis of effective Reproductive Number over time since a variant first starts spreading. XBB.1.5 appears faster and more sustained than ANY of the variants since Omicron's first wave last January. Current Rt 1.6-1.8

Finally, a good citation for the lore that Ken Thompson did actually perform his famed attack that he won the Turing Award for: niconiconi.neocities.org/pos… There is still the lore that a mysterious login for "kt" appeared on a system outside of Bell Labs... jargon.net/jargonfile/b/back…

A lot of the recent policy debates around surveillance/encryption start from the frame of police *losing capability* but nobody ever talks about how quickly their capabilities have grown. Did we have a democratic debate about ubiquitous location surveillance?

It's easy for people to issue security warnings _after_ systems are broken. What takes much more work is _proactively_ analyzing risks deeply enough to issue meaningful warnings _before_ systems are broken. Here's a 2021 example, disputing the "case for SIKE" security analysis.
Agreeing with main points in 3, 4, 6, 10 in eprint.iacr.org/2021/543. More objections to 2, 5, 7, 9. Most important dispute is regarding risk management, 1+8. Recent advances in torsion-point attacks have killed a huge part of the SIKE parameter space, far worse than MOV vs ECDLP.

A quick rage-thread about credentials. When security auditors just say things like "Critical credentials need to be rotated every 90 days" you need to fire them into the sun with urgency. Here's what you actually need ...

We found a way to leak data on Apple Silicon processors that is "at rest": that is, data the core never reads speculatively or non-speculatively. This will be an odd one, so stick around for the 🧵 and see prefetchers.info

As a… – MacOS user I want… – a difficult-to-visually-parse 8x4 matrix of left-aligned icons, indiscernibly categorised into two untitled sections, beneath an AppleID section with right-aligned icons so that… – I can modify system preferences

A friend asked why they haven't seen much international news about the COVID outbreak in Vietnam. Honestly I don't know exactly why, but here's what I know. Please spread the word. The world needs to know this.

Apple, 2006. There is only one ringtone for iPhone. Only two people have my iPhone number - @tfadell and Steve Jobs. Still can't hear it without freaking out.

It's finally ready: Prodfiler, a continuous profiler that "just works" -- for C/C++/Rust/Go/JVM/Python/Perl/PHP -- no code change required, no symbols on the machine required, no service restart required. Check out: prodfiler.com or the blog post below.

Here is a brand new PPP poll from Alaska, commissioned by some giant nerds in the tech community, that shows Alyse Galvin within THREE POINTS of Don Young in the Alaska race. The margin of error is something like 4%. This is hot off the presses! 🔥🗳

(If you're wondering why Apple doesn't appear in this thread, it's because Apple doesn't have a corporate PAC. They are proof by example that there is zero need for any tech company to make direct political donations. Motivated employees could shut these PACS down on Monday.)
