The Kremlin now threatening Armenia with cutting off gas supply if its demands are not met. The demands are: - no discussion about the Russian base in Gyumri - hands off Gazprom Armenia (which owns the domestic grid) and South Caucasus Railway (which owns the entire railway system and is itself owned by Russian Railways) - repeal EU-integration start law - drop all legal cases against pro-Russian politicians - install deputy PM who will work with Moscow The same instrument of coercion the Kremlin used against Ukraine in 2006/9 and Europe in 2022. This is also what they did to Lithuania, which backfired and caused the country to eliminate its energy dependence on Russia entirely. Not sure if Armenia could do the same given its issues with the main alternatives that would be Azerbaijan and Turkey (Iran already working as backup to current temporary halt), certainly not anytime soon since it has no sea access to get LNG, the domestic grid is Gazprom’s, and the nuclear offset Metsamor is also linked to Russia. But this is the situation that the AfD in Germany wants to put their country in by restoring its dependence on Russian-sourced energy.
