It is an extraordinary failure that the BBC has the resources to do genuine public interest journalism that is much less viable commercially (from foreign correspondents to long-form local reporting) but instead we get relentless lowest common denominator nonsense

A selection of stories on the front page of the BBC News app this morning.
Britain’s public service broadcaster doesn’t have a single correspondent in South America because of budget cuts, yet devotes resources to pumping out slop like this every day.

- 19yo with disorder that makes him prone to blood clots - calls an ambulance with symptoms typical of a blood clot in the lungs - blood test to rule out blood clot not performed - discharged with antibiotics - reattended A&E later same day coughing up blood (red flag for blood clot). Discharged again. - saw GP a week later who sent to A&E as had obvious symptoms of blood clot - discharged with no investigation for blood clots from A&E again as doctor “forgot” to refer to be admitted for tests - attended later same day as symptoms worsening. WAS actually admitted but communication so poor and kept in waiting room on a chair after “admission” that he didn’t realise he’d been admitted and went home to sleep. - died next day at home His life would have been saved with a simple blood test at any of the FIVE separate encounters with medical professionals.
A FOI has just come back regarding the staff involved in the decision making in this tragic case . The death of 19 yr old Isaac Arrowsmith.

This is straightforwardly wrong, though: Bakare's initial investigation was a model of how to approach this kind of thing seriously and sensitively, with a proper acknowledgement of the malicious intent behind the original story and the stakes involved. Have a care
The Guardian before and after. The audacity.

A few things about last few days have made me deeply uncomfortable. 1. The no of ppl in positions of responsibility who aren't following Samaritans guidelines, which exist to prevent further suicide. Some have unwittingly been elevating suicide as a way to shape the narrative.

Many people are seemingly fine with having the police investigate journalists for 4 months (for asking questions) or seeming to fabricate claims regarding the most horrendous intimidation possible, as long as it’s their side. That’s seemingly the world now.

It's very confusing to see people on the Left calling for more regulation of the press. All hard and soft law regulating the press has been used - and is used - by the wealthy and powerful to silence their critics.

2/ A major reason this story didn't come out until it did, and a major reason it metastasized to the size it did, was because Jason Arday weaponized the U.K.'s insane approach to libel laws and "online harassment" to sic cops and lawyers on good-faith critics. There's a...

If someone is repeatedly promoted/celebrated as a paragon of virtue & excellence by the national broadcaster, major publishing houses & elite academia — and if they have clearly therefore made the leap from simply “an academic” to becoming a “public intellectual” — then it’s a perfectly legitimate subject of commentary/media interest if that person’s career turns out to be based on a series of farcical falsehoods. I think it’s disgraceful trying to apportion blame on people who merely commented/reported on the story & interpreted the facts as they saw fit. If there’s any fault for Arday’s horrendously tragic death then it lies with those who had a duty of care & who failed — the employers & sycophants who put him in this egregious position, suspending their disbelief, lowering their standards and dropping somebody who was obviously vulnerable/unwell in way out of their depth so that they could flaunt their progressive credentials to midwits.

How to say this gently… if you strategically build a public profile using newsworthy stories about yourself & you get plenty media attention (which then makes you a lot of money) it’s no surprise that your downfall & unravelling of these newsworthy stories is also v newsworthy.

Look, if you’re going to be a turbo-fraudulent serial fabulist whose crime spree has discredited one of the world’s oldest academic institutions, then you should at least have the decency to be funny. And this, my friends, is funny. We’ll miss him when he’s gone.
Jason Arday has resigned as Professor from Cambridge. He narrates the experience as one of relentless victimhood & persecution. If Pangram is correct, his letter of resignation is itself 100% AI generated.

The Guardian has investigated claims of harassment made by Jason Arday! Yes, actually checked to see if they were true. Arday was amazed. “To be honest with you, I thought you’d just believe me,” he told the G. I’d have assumed the same. In my case, the Guardian simply reprinted lurid claims from Twitter as fact . open.substack.com/pub/katecl…

If I fake a football career, can I get an MBE, £151,465 per year job and Honorary Doctorate too? Seems to have worked out very well for Mete Coban!
My parents came to London believing tomorrow could be better than yesterday. The Downs Estate gave that hope a home. The University of Greenwich gave it purpose. London gave me the privilege to serve.
