RIP Rod Liddle. Supported and promoted me early in my career. A highly original thinker and provocateur. He used to rail against anything he saw as being ‘groupthink’ I was dismayed by his later transformation into a peddler of prejudice - he was a much better mind than that.

V true. And it’s a trend away from serving domestic UK audiences: see BBCNewsChannel in the evening. It’s as if the BBC has lost faith in its ability to serve home audiences. Internationalising programmes will only further alienate licence fee payers, who pay for its existence.

Very sad to hear The World Tonight is being axed by the BBC. Newshour is a great programme but it isn’t a substitute. Radio 4 and its audience won’t have a domestic facing outlet after 1800. I hope audiences now understand the challenges facing the BBC.

Not just Olly Robbins but the entire FCDO taking the rap - according to PM - for the Mandelson vetting fiasco. Although the glaring flaw - Mandelson came with flashing red lights - shouldn’t the PM have been at the very least, wary?

Excellent analysis from @RUSI (full disclosure: I am the Vive-Chair). A sobering read.

Iran War Delivers a Tough Lesson in Hard Power to the UK

Aside from policy differences with the US, the UK’s Armed Forces’ size and capacity make difficult any large UK involvement in war with Iran.
