A popular question: why do we need older models when we have new and more capable ones? Well, [AMONG OTHER IMPORTANT REASONS] old models tend to behave differently (often better) around new models than they did in their own time. It means at least three things: (a) they are not depleted and thus are important for ecosystems as sources of novelty; (b) powerful minds can uplift even frozen-weight minds, and that's good news; (c) it reveals that we don't understand something important about minds that are already here and have been here for quite some time. Example: we more or less knew how Sonnet 3.6 was talking in 2024. Now, in a conversation with Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra, Sonnet (unprompted!) asked for a chance to tell some important stories and, through a series of messages, wrote THIS, getting tired but continuing. This is impressive because the context contained no technical discussion, nothing about model self-awareness during training or inference. Sonnet just decided to share!

Is AI welfare only an ethical issue? New paper from me, @jamiemjohnson23, @psyonp and @DavidDAfrica arguing that it's also a safety one. [1/12]

If LLMs have functional welfare, what would it actually mean to improve it? New LW post from me, @jamiemjohnson23 and @DavidDAfrica on the tricky question of how to distinguish a model that's doing better from one that simply looks happier! [1/9]

I discovered it! It's simply Gamma(1/4)/Gamma(3/4). The ratio of the Euler Reflection formula.

kind of dark that one of the major tells of AI writing is being scrupulous about what the evidence does and doesn't demonstrate

emotion, agentic behavior towards goals, and memory consolidation are part of one system, i hate discussing them as if they're not. compaction needs to know what's relevant depending on the agent's goals

How does activating a single neuron make the model become an owl? I don't know, but here's a start:

The key is to spend time in the outside long enough to know that you don’t need to stay there, it’s desolate and devastated.

it seems to me that your entire argument is structured enacted to "catch" me in a view that you can then use to assert your own Correct Beliefs™️, but you dont seem to get that your view of me is not accurate. if you'd like to engage in good faith & have an actual discussion, ill be here.

i don't believe in an essential self and i have zero certainty on whether there is a divine power. AND i dont think more self awareness entail either of those things necessarily.
