This was a fun one. Use our Catalog API to find products that have 3D models. Now I want a sauna @evanspiegel

Fun chat. I stand by my claim: Shopify's Global Catalog is *the* gold rush opportunity of 2026. It's open, it's free, and it's agent ready to power discovery-to-checkout. Docs @ shopify.dev/docs/agents/cata… Demos: xitter.cf/vlaurenlee/status/2067… UCP deep-dive: xitter.cf/igrigorik/status/20564…
"This is the biggest @ShopifyDevs opportunity right now." @igrigorik, Distinguished Engineer at Shopify, shared more about the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and what's coming next during DotDev. The major moments: - UCP is a free, public, global catalogue API. Only Google, Amazon, and a few others have solved discovery at internet scale, and almost none expose it publicly. Shopify spent $100M+ over two years and made it free. "This is a picks-and-shovels moment. There's gold in that mountain." - Built with Google, launched in January. Decades of Shopify scale compressed, plus partners like Target. By April, Meta, Salesforce, Amazon, and Stripe had joined. - How UCP works. A merchant declares what it supports like cards, checkout, subscriptions, split payments, gift cards. A client or agent says "I don't speak gift cards yet, but I understand subscriptions." They negotiate the overlap and transact. - Completely open participation. A merchant can invent "fancy subscriptions" tomorrow, and any agent that speaks it can transact. It turns commerce into a market negotiation. - Modelling all of commerce is absurdly hard. It's the world's longest-running trade and always evolving, so you can't write a static spec. UCP is built around capability negotiation instead. UCP aggregates across all merchants and normalizes the permutations (one seller's size 10 is another's 9.5; blue is someone's turquoise) into coherent availability, prices, and latency. Thanks for coming on the show Ilya! We'd love to have you back. Ecomm Cowboy is live every M-F at 12P CT.

Market gap: no shopping experiences for ML engineers. You compose DAGs, wire nodes, stare lovingly at JSON. Then you buy socks on... a search bar? A grid? Where's the canvas?? So I built one → Shop Canvas Powered by @Shopify Global Catalog API yada-shop.myshopify.com/

I’ve met with over a dozen developers in the past week and I’ve seen some really cool applications. Scout was one of the cutest ones 😀 apps.apple.com/app/id6475358…
Look at what people are already building on @Shopify Catalog API: → gamers.town → bricks.stormdevs.com → essembl.com None of them are stores. They're apps. A whole new kind of entrepreneur is showing up. Tell me what you're building!

Since Quick launched in July 2025, we’ve collectively built more than 50,000 sites. Over 50% of employees have at least one Quick site. When you remove the barriers to build & share, it’s incredible what happens. More examples of how we’re using Quick : shopify.engineering/quick

Most folks that run Ad campaigns focus on optimizing the target audience, message, copy, visuals, etc. all to get a person to click on an ad and visit their website. That is only half the journey! Once a person lands on the website, optimizing for conversion is often overlooked..

Oh man, all the immigration talk has me posting my first long post here. Here we go! Recruiting for top engineers is one of the toughest and highest ROI activities for any tech company. I've never been on any team where we felt we hired enough engineers, because honestly, there just aren’t enough of them. All this H1B talk is hilarious. So many people assume companies are eager to hire talent from overseas, but the reality is that H1Bs cost us the most important thing we have: time. If we could hire more great engineers directly in the States, we absolutely would. The time saved on immigration paperwork, sponsorship, and waiting periods would be invaluable. Do you really think @elonmusk is prioritizing hiring overseas at the cost of losing time? Absolutely not. At Microsoft, I was part of the recruiting team that hired for Devices, Azure, and 343 Industries. We filled many specialized technical roles, but less than 10% of those hires required H1B visas. At Facebook, the story was the same. The bottleneck wasn’t prioritizing visa candidates - it was simply a shortage of exceptional talent. At a high level, great engineers aren’t just technically excellent. They’re effective communicators, strong collaborators with non-engineering teams, and aligned with the company’s mission and values. Finding someone with all these qualities is rare. When you do, the question of visa sponsorship becomes secondary. The priority is always bringing them onto your team - do whatever it takes. The idea that companies “prefer” H1Bs because they’re cheaper or easier is so silly. What’s driving the demand is simple: there aren’t enough top tier engineers to keep up with the demand. That’s part of why I love recruiting so much. When done well, it becomes one of the most high-impact functions for any company.
