#Dorothy is Karthik Subbaraj’s bravest film so far, yet it is the tenderest film from him. Every directorial choice made by the director lands with perfection, right from story set in the most hyper-masculine town Madurai to getting Illaiyaraaja on board to score the music. In awe of Ilaiyaraaja, an 83 year old man who understands the nuances and sensibilities of queer culture. His music made the film reach the tenderness of the subject to the masses. I witnessed this in Woodlands theatre, one of the mass-iest single screens in Chennai, where the crowd could easily dismiss the film and start passing crass remarks out loud, but the auditorium was silent at the right moments & cheered wherever the film suggests them to. I would like to reiterate that Rishikanth has Rajinikanth written all over him! He’s J Mahendran’s Rajinikanth to be precise, KS has figured it out pretty well. Sanath was the show stealer, a generational performer, a lifetime role indeed. Keerthy Suresh truly does justice to the titular role, she did play the maternal role damn well. In awe of how she does such beautiful roles so effortlessly. I teared up during the railway track scene between Subbu & Karthi’s mother. That scene will stay with me for a long time!
