Most discourse about (even that which is ostensibly to celebrate) public service focuses on the negative stuff: hardship, sacrifice, putting oneself in harm's way, etc. But there is also so much of joy in serving the public & @NYCMayor is doing important work highlighting that.

5 years ago today my family and I took a US Gov't evacuation flight as COVID swept the globe. Today USG is doing all it can not to help citizens, but to undermine the bureaucracy. To the #MissionDrivenBureaucrats who work for all of us around the globe: stay strong. We need you.
My family and I took an @StateDept evacuation flight from Senegal to the US on Friday. I’d like to say a few things about that, focusing on 1) The people who work for State (wonderful) & 2) The impression it left me about coordinated US airport response to COVID (disturbing). 1/

The social contract is fraying. Our states oft can't "deliver" - & when they do that doesn't seem to satisfy, with democratic backsliding and populism the result. We argue this is because 'capacity' is not just technical - it is also relationships between citizen & the state.👇
