QIP 2027 CFP is out! Some changes: Separate registration and submission deadlines one week apart. Paper must be on arXiv by submission deadline. 3 page abstract has no author names. Poster and talk submissions separate. AI use OK, but badly written papers will be rejected.
We're pleased to announce the QIP 2027 call for submissions. The key dates are as follows; refer to the website qipconference.org/2027/call/ for detailed instructions.

Raise your hand if you want to be the next one attacked by Tobias's agent dark factory swarm.
Replying to @letonyo
I don't know if it counts, but I have been testing my agent dark factory swarm on Kitaev's amazing paper arxiv.org/abs/2405.02434 (partly to chase down the constants, and generalise). The paper holds up so far (as expected), and has resisted about 2000 adversarial agent rounds...

I lost my wife and son in the Flight 5342 tragedy. I mostly show up on X to stay current on — and advocate for — aviation safety reform. But it's starting to feel like we're losing the plot. 1/6

A new proposal imposes significant restrictions on F-1 and J-1 visas, which would sharply curtail foreign talent flow to US grad schools. Both @UMDPhysics and @umiacs are urging faculty to comment, so please consider. Comment period expires Sept 29. federalregister.gov/document…
.@realDonaldTrump on granting automatic Green Cards to college graduates: "... What I want to do and what I will do is, you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country." "And that includes junior colleges, too. Anybody graduates from a college, you go in there for two years or four years. If you graduate or you get a doctorate degree from a college, you should be able to stay in this country." "... I know of stories where people graduated ... from a college, and they desperately wanted to stay here." "They had a plan for a company, or a concept, and they can't." "They go back to India, they go back to China. They do the same basic company in those places, and they become multi-billionaires, employing thousands and thousands of people. And it could have been done here." "And a bigger example is that you need a pool of people to work for your companies. You have great companies and they have to be smart people." "You have to be able to recruit these people and keep the people. Somebody graduates at the top of the class, they can't even make a deal with a company because they don't think they're going to be able to stay in the country. That is going to end on day one."

#USA #Senegal #Nigeria: African Studies Association at Rutgers University Announces Ken Harrow ASA Film Fund and Sembène-Kelani Film Prize The African Studies Association (ASA) at Rutgers University has announced the creation of the Ken Harrow ASA Film Fund and the renaming of its film prize to the Sembène-Kelani Film Prize, after African cinema trailblazers Ousmane Sembène (Senegal) and Tunde Kelani (Nigeria), The prize is awarded to outstanding African films, whether fiction or documentary. The fund and prize encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of African cinema, supporting scholarly study and practical engagement with African films. They also honor the legacy of Dr. Kenneth Harrow, a distinguished professor who made significant contributions to the study of African cinema and literature, and celebrate the contributions of Sembène and Kelani. Filmmakers or their distributors can submit nominations by April 30 annually. The award winner will be chosen by the prize committee and invited to attend the Annual ASA Meeting for a screening of the winning film. The award will include roundtrip airfare and accommodation for up to four nights, conference registration, and $500. The fund and prize are supported through donations (from the Harrows) and collaborations with institutions like Michigan State University and Université Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Established in 1957, the African Studies Association (ASA) is a U.S.-based organization devoted to promoting comprehensive knowledge about Africa through interdisciplinary exchanges, publications (including the African Studies Review), and an annual meeting that connects scholars, policymakers, and educators globally. 🧵: Every student of mathematics knows the famous story of Ramanujan and Hardy – but it seems that @RishiSunak, @SuellaBraverman, and the @ukhomeoffice have missed its crucial message. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sriniv… 1/10

Many of us joined QI once it already seemed like a winner, but Beth Ruskai proved strong subadditivity 51 years ago! And kept contributing to the field ever since, doing great math but also a lot of community building and organizing. This is a big loss.
I received sad news that Mary Beth Ruskai passed away Sept. 27, 2023 at her home in Vermont. She was a titan of quantum information & mathematical physics, most known for her joint proof of strong subadditivity of quantum entropy. She was a strong promoter of women in science.

quantum-journal.org/ is a great achievement and owes a lot to the leadership of @MarjBaldwin and (not on twitter) Christian Gogolin and Marcus Huber.
Who said researchers couldn't run their own journals, ethically and at a fraction of the cost? Seven years of this project, a thousand research papers published in @quantumjournal in six years, wow! Y'all make me proud! 💜

Also, if anyone is looking to hire senior faculty in QI, I know a few people who are searching (not me!) and would be happy to help connect. Email me if you're in this situation.
