Founder and CEO @proof, @patk on verifying AI agents instead of just blocking them "Prior to today, for a lot of our customers, the answer is block." "Authentication is not authorization." "You sign into your bank, your trading account, whatever it may be, you have a valid session, but they still make you do other things. They make you do FMF or MFA. They make you do SMS OTP. They make you show a license." "These industries have real obligations to capture identity and consent in these transactions, and that's really what we have enabled today in a seamless manner." A valid session was never proof of permission, and banks are now building the extra step agents will have to clear.
Don't block agents. Identify them. @sytaylor is joined by @patk , founder and CEO @proof Pat Kinsel has built an open framework to identify agents that is compatible with how banks do KYC today. It's called x401, built on the internet's HTTP 401 "authorization is required" But the really clever bit is the fact that it then uses verifiable credentials that are IAL2 certified to prove the authentication for the underlying human. Why's that clever? Because that's the same standard the US government published under the National Institute of Science and Technology NIST, and the one that FinCEN recently gave guidance on as being usable in bank Customer Identification Programs (CIP). With new regulatory clarity from FinCEN and banking regulators on VDCs in CIP, @proof is launching reusable digital identity: a more private, portable way for customers to prove who they are. Cryptographically secure. Independently audited. Built to federal identity standards. Held by the customer. proof.com/blog/proof-launche…

This is a HORRIBlE idea and why @proof exists, why digital signatures matter, why we created @x401ID, why Verifiable Intent and other protocols are emerging. Holy shit this is a one way freight train to fraud hell and the complete loss of identity and agency.
Okay Instinct is wild. Just found and filed for $2,182 in lost dollars owed to me. It even found my ssn proof and signed the forms using a photo of my passport for signature. 🤯 Prompt: “Search every state's unclaimed property database for money owed to me. Use my full name and every city I've lived in. For anything you find: tell me what it is, who owes it, and how much - then file the claims end-to-end. Walk me through any documents or signatures you need from me, and don't stop until every claim is submitted.” Thanks to @peterpham for the tip.

The agentic economy needs open standards for both payment and identity. Circle is proud to support @proof's launch of x401, an open protocol for verified identity in the agentic economy. x402 answers how an agent pays. x401 answers who authorized the action. proof.com/blog/identity-infr…

Agents will soon book travel, refill prescriptions, trade stocks, open accounts, pay, and so much more. With x401, sites can require verified identity and unlock countless use cases. With @proof they can be certain of who is behind the agent and what was authorized.

AI Agents will increasingly perform actions for people. They will buy products, access services, complete transactions, and interact with other machines. That raises a basic question: How does a system know whether to trust an AI agent. Today, to solve this, @proof launches x401, the open protocol for the agentic internet in collaboration with identity leaders at @OpenAI, @Google, @circle, @okta, Mattr, @lightspark, and more. Here @csuwildcat goes into what it all means with me. Available now at x401.id

WAKE UP! It’s time to have a serious debate about giving your identity to AI. Artificial Intelligence is the single greatest tool ever created to learn, build, and express yourself. It is a TERRIBLE idea to require people to hand over their legal identity to access these tools. What I believe: The federal government is well within its rights to restrict who can access models they perceive to be a threat to national security. AND, people have a fundamental right to access tools of expression without revealing their legal identity. I co-wrote the Internet Users Bill of Rights in 2007 with @Scobleizer @arrington and others, working for @rozzie I partnered with @boztank and @btaylor when @Meta launched Granular Data Permissions in 2010, I’ve testified before Congress to advance privacy legislation, serve on the board of @TechNetUpdate to champion the same, have brought leaders like @csuwildcat into @proof to lead the cause, and have fought for this right my entire career. But Pat, you run an identity company? Yes. And the choice between securing transactions & systems with identity vs. losing our privacy is a false one. The technology exists today to have our cake and eat it too. The topic is urgent. The @WhiteHouse's moves to restrict @AnthropicAI's Fable model to US Nationals is supposedly leading them to collect every person’s identity. @TechCrunch tells us this is imminent. I hope this is wrong. In needing to demonstrate their systems are safe, Anthropic is in the unenviable position of needing to disprove a negative. It’s understandable why @DarioAmodei might go down this path, but it is the wrong one. @chamath and others are calling for KYC in front of AI. Perhaps the right security practice, but a terrible development for society at large if not done properly. The solution is Zero Knowledge Proofs. Confirm someone is a US National, over 18+, whatever… without collecting any personal information. These technologies exist, are ready, and in use. OpenID for Verifiable Credentials, Selective Disclosures, BBS Signatures, trusted issuance. To my colleagues, if you still believe in what we all fought for, I strongly encourage you to engage here. We do not want our identity tied to every idea we have, everything we seek to learn, and everything we create. Reach out. Let’s do this.
