Looking to get outside in August? Look no further than your local farms. Read how farms are welcoming us to their landscapes in my latest Substack newsletter, Probably Outside. monicacardoza.substack.com/p…

I write the Probably Outside newsletter. It's filled with local, social, dirt-cheap ways to spend more time outside. The Mid-June Issue: More Outings Than You Can Shake a Stick At+Native Plant Events at Garden Centers+Themed Walks+’Undernight' Camping open.substack.com/pub/monica…

All across Iceland, you see reminders of how tight-knit the local community is. At this Reykjavík playground, instead of swinging on parallel tracks in individual worlds, kids swing into the center and then out again, like a laughing squeeze box of neighborhood joy.

After ~7 yr of work, it's finally out! We present a molecular phylogeny of butterflies sampling >90% of genera & >2000 spp. Butterflies emerged ~100 million yr ago in North America and first fed on legumes. Thanks to all 87 co-authors from 28 countries! rdcu.be/dcaVU

Check out this fun image of kids playing in a fountain that accompanies this horrifying story of deadly heat. This is climate propaganda at its finest. Aren't dangerous heatwaves just the best? opb.org/article/2023/05/13/u…

Good reminder to re-read “The Wind in the Willows.”
"He thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before—this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again. All was a-shake and a-shiver—glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and bubble. The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spellbound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea." ~ Kenneth Grahame, 'The Wind in the Willows' Illustration by E.H. Shepard.

The best thing about being sober is that you keep your word. Just like most alcoholics I used to lie to others and myself constantly. Anything to get the next drink. 🍺 🍷 🍹 When Giuseppe was dying last month I wanted to build a little memorial garden for him. His favorite thing in his last 3 months was to smell the flowers. So to have a garden built around the stones where he is buried would be fitting. We can cremate and scatter the ashes of any future dogs in Giuseppe’s little memorial garden with him at the center and fondly remembered. 💐 🌺 🌸 Now that I’m sober I could organize to keep my promise. In the old days I’d have talked a lot, made big promises but the ultimately the garden wouldn’t have happened. The drink would have been more important. It’s just some little plants and grass for a street dog I only knew for 3 months but for me it means the world. It’s a really nice feeling being able to keep your promises to yourself and others when addiction free 🥰🙏
