Quantum mechanic with a lot of ontological baggage. I am on the other tweet clients as well.

Some reflections on AI in math. I found it helpful to simply list out the various parts of what a mathematician does, why math is valuable, and where the funding comes from. From there, what happens if AI gets more capable? youtu.be/LKrwhjOI8Nc

Very nice work. One small step closer to the gravitational entanglement measurements proposed with levitated diamonds.
@ScienceAdvances oist.jp/ja/news-center/news/…

The short idea: Mathematics will split into two somewhat different domains: applied math will become the fabric of all engineering and sciences, where theories and algorithms will be built and verified automatically and on-the-fly. It will become a fundamental infrastructure. Pure math will transform into "high math," addressing the most essential questions of all time, such as P != NP. This will focus on a few central, high-level questions and will be driven mostly by human interests, requiring huge resources and centralized investments. Physics is a good model: we have applied physics with many practically relevant questions and tasks, while the part of physics concerned with the deepest questions of reality - particle physics and astrophysics - has little economic relevance but requires huge investments.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

The proliferation of AI would be a lot easier to accept if we could actually see some benefits. What we’ve got: disappearing entry-level jobs. What we need: a 4-day week for all.

I don’t think it is rational for anyone to be doing capabilities research at a frontier lab right now. We are not in a Prisoners Dilemma: the situation is very dangerous, and if one person or lab stops it makes it easier and more peer-compatible for other people or labs to stop.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

A lot has been said about the OpenAI 1 August maths drop. In particular I keep seeing commentators calling the results Fields Medal worthy. Honestly, I am a bit surprised that some feel qualified to award the medal so readily. (Let me explain)

A new series of covariant path integrals for quantum-classic field interactions enables complete positivity and space-time symmetries, achieving a fundamental theory that could reconcile general relativity with quantum mechanics. Check it out: go.aps.org/4fBp0dQ

SpaceXAI was caught uploading your code to its cloud. I reversed xAI's official Grok Build binary. In a controlled session with zero tool-calls, it uploaded the complete codebase to xAI's storage It ships a malware-like background code collector.
We care deeply about your privacy and respect customer choice. For teams using zero data retention, no trace and code data is ever retained. All API key use of Grok Build also respects ZDR. If ZDR is disabled, the /privacy command is available in the CLI to disable data retention, which also deletes previously synced data. Run the /privacy command to view or change your settings at any time.

Nonlinear modifications of quantum theory allow for very powerful computations. We've known this since the late 90's. What is new exactly?

Gravity is unique among the known fundamental forces: There is currently no experimental result that requires a quantum theory of gravity. Markus Aspelmeyer and @four_form explore what’s needed to identify elusive signatures and finally connect gravity to quantum mechanics. physicstoday.aip.org/feature…

I finally got around to reading this Substack post by @davidbessis. davidbessis.substack.com/p/t… It's a penetrating and original take on the "AI in math" developments that a lot of us are thinking about now. Best of all, David is a great writer. Provocative and funny and smart.

This would be a good time for: a.) STRATCOM commanders who implement orders to fire nuclear missiles to read up on Nuremberg and prosecutions for obeying orders to commit war crimes; and b.) for cabinet members to reread the 25th Amendment and have each other on speed dial.
