For the first time since 2021, no Tawny Owl chicks were found in 25 nest boxes monitored by Sussex Barn Owl Group.☹️🦉
A worrying sign, possibly tied to prey shortages. This is being investigated with other groups.

Breathtaking views of this stunning juvenile Honey Buzzard that toured Dungeness Point this morning. I couldn't have asked for closer views unless it decided to land on my head!

Many thanks to Barry Banson for bringing this fantastic Willowherb Hawkmoth to the Obs for viewing which he caught two nights ago. (The same night as the Folkestone individual.) Goes without saying - the first area record. And the fifth British record.

Had a very enjoyable day at Rye Harbour Nature reserve yesterday. Seeing 14 species of wader and the 3 species of terns getting ready to nest. Also great to see the black-headed gulls starting to raise their young, close in front of Parks hide.

It amazes me the amount of tweets saying ‘2023 was the best years birding’ etc with no mention of the catastrophic declines in common migs! Has birding become about vagrants & nothing else? I enjoy the scarcities/rarities I found but the lack of common migs is far more worrying!

Got to remember that all birds are special, no matter how common they may seem to you.

Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr).
