one of my favorite things to do on youtube is to search for things like “London walk”, “Rio walk”, etc for different cities around the world. it’s so nice to just see ordinary people going about their lives all over the world

In some sense, I see all multiplayer collaboration systems as *simulations*
Whenever there’s concurrent editing, the goal is to simulate the counterfactual “what would A have done if they’d seen B’s changes”

Question on niche communities:
In the old internet, mailing lists were the go-to places for knowledgeable people to talk about niche topics at a very high level of sophistication, e.g. Shaksper for Shakespeare; Extropians for transhumanism/AI; and so on.
The level of discourse was so high that old emails on those lists -- from two decades ago -- still have value, which is unusual for the internet.
To some extent, forums and subreddits fulfil this; although the average level of discourse is lower, the peaks can still be high.
Are there other online spaces where such high level of discourse occurs? Or is it just Discord/groupchats now?
For example, where do you go to talk about Shakespeare or economics today with other knowledgeable people?
If it is just Discord and groupchats, this seems sad; content on these is walled-off and decays fast. We can surely do better, no?

🤩Fun to gather AI founders & builders in NYC. Tonight’s Forecasting AI event, a collab w @ignitetalks, allowed speakers 5 min, 20 slides at 15 sec each to deliver the ‘how’ & ‘why’ of their story. Thank you to speakers incl @vintrotweets @AliceAlbrecht @davey_morse @LaurenVriens

plexus.earth does a superset of this, since all posts are private, but collisions are surfaced (the only way to browse to others' posts) (h/t @davey_morse)
I had high hopes for Wunderkit back in the day, which included this kind of public/private split on projects.

It is rare for people to come into themselves if no one is excited and curious about their core.

What would a social platform based off of mutual thoughts, instead of mutual friends look like?
A platform made to truly connect, instead of consume?
This weeks episode of @EarlyStagesPod is my conversation with @davey_morse who is exploring that question with @plexusearth

voice message conversations are some of my favorite conversations because each party gets to say as much as they want on any particular topic, and totally skip responding to whatever they don’t care about, all totally async

In the long term I expect almost all human jobs to become socially oriented. Even when AIs are better at every task, people will pay a premium to interact with another human. Human services will be like handmade goods today: rare but profitable.

So another thing my husband and I do is refrain from having important conversations by text. We learned very early on—actually in engagement that texts can go way off the rails because you can’t assess tone, body language, and you can only say but so much in a text.

Actually, having mulled this over, I think it's one of the more likely outcomes that voice becomes the primary interface for day-to-day computing (as opposed to "information/knowledge work".
Like touchscreens vs. mouse pointer-based UX.
Hm. have to think more.

This idea intrigues me, mostly because from what little I’ve used @getairchat , the thing that’s struck me is
ITS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO BE MEAN OR DISMISSIVE TO PEOPLE WHEN YOU HEAR AND RESPOND TO THEIR VOICE
People are so much nicer when it’s more than text
modern social networks make people more depressed than happy.
