This lovely Roman disc brooch has traces of bright red and blue enamel which hints at how colourful and striking it would have been. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/database/artefa…

“Let Him Be A Man Of Glory” ...at least that's our best effort at translating the inscription we think is '+ SIT hOMENE GLAVERE' on this C13th medieval vessica seal matrix. Unusual to see decoration of both faces of the seal. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/database/artefa…

It’s #FindsFriday and we’re sharing this wonderfully preserved clay smoking pipe from the late C19th to early C20th. “Burns Cutty” was a pattern name produced by various makers. This spurless variety of pipe was produced 1850 onwards. #OurIslandStory @PipeArchive

From the 17th century onwards, clay pipes were a common way to use tobacco, especially in England and the Netherlands. Archaeologically, we can detect past pipe users from circular abrasions to the enamel caused by clenching the teeth around the round clay pipe stem.
