sorry the tweet was inexact. it was meant to imply that the actual syntax is parsed rather than just regex matched, but it never makes it to the actual tree phase. the goal is that it’s accurate according to the real syntax rules rather than a close approximation with regex.

you must have missed our first website launch with the epilepsy warning, but we’re glad you like it!
We wrote up a blog post about all the hard work and hard tech that went into making Highlights.
- Highlights uses actual language ASTs to highlight rather than regex
- It is often hundreds of times faster than Shiki in language-to-language comparisons while also using much less memory
- It supports over 70 languages
- It's a drop-in replacement for Shiki when your environment supports wasm and simd

Today we're launching an exciting new project: Highlights
Highlights is a syntax highlighter that outputs HTML. It improves on both speed and correctness compared to the existing industry standard libraries.
It's an optional drop-in replacement in Diffs, and it's ready to use today. In fact, it's already powering diffshub․com!
Check it out at diffs.com/highlights
OR `pnpm install @pierre/highlights`
