I was on NPR yesterday in a chat w @SachaPfeiffer on the evolving nature of international politics, U.S. foreign policy, and coercive diplomacy. Sacha is a fantastic journalist and I really enjoyed the conversation.

My forthcoming book with @SUPress, "Deference and Defiance: Status Seeking in Gulf-United States Politics," explores how status competition has shaped the GCC's states' propensities to support - and often oppose - US foreign policy plans in the wider Middle East since the 1990s.
On the blog, author @Tyler_B_Parker writes, "Why do America’s Gulf partners support some US foreign policy plans while opposing or avoiding others?" buff.ly/WLFovyY

I am happy to share my article on the US's "Major Non-NATO Ally" status, which signals friendship and facilitates cooperation without providing formal security commitments. I use a paired comparison of Qatar and the UAE to explain why and when some US partners accept MNNA status.
Why do some U.S. partners accept “Major Non-NATO Ally” (MNNA) status while others decline? Comparing Qatar and the UAE, @Tyler_B_Parker’s article unpacks how acknowledging America’s appreciation influences these decisions.
