Introducing Honest Thumbnails
A Chrome Extension to unslop YouTube thumbnails with stills from the video. Brings back the early 2010s vibe of Youtube where not everything was about clickbait.
While looking into how @karpathy's HackerTube works, I learnt that YouTube has a CDN that provides still frames from the following chunks ¼, ½, ¾ of each video.
So as you can imagine, it was only a matter of time until Claude turned this into a Chrome Extension. Honestly, it took me longer to make the icon than it took Claude to write the code.
Open Source and MIT. Fork it, steal it, do whatever your heart wants with it.

Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5:
hackertube.org/
- Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session)
- Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads
- Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version
- HackerTube Longs ✊
A bit more on the process:
I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing.
Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

Today we're launching Desert Ant Labs: a European frontier AI lab building on-device intelligence.
18 models across audio, vision, and text. SDKs for Swift, Kotlin, and JavaScript.
No tokens. No logins. Nothing leaves the device.

interface design is pattern recognition: discernment of which form to apply and when, and sometimes (rarely) pattern creation
most interface problems have already been solved. there’s no need to reinvent the wheel each time. a good designer knows when to rely on a rich corpus of existing work, and when to push the envelope with something new or unexpected
systems cohesion and elegance: so-called “canonical interfaces” are much harder to cultivate and steward

Love their attitude. We’re always pushing them, and they’re willing to collaborate with the design/developer community to improve Liquid Glass. How can we be mad at them? Come on.

This sorta thing is just mind bending to me. I feel like we're all still taking for granted how crazy this all is.
Introducing interactive video from @odysseyml—video you can watch and interact with, imagined by AI in real-time.
Give it a try for free today on (almost) any device, and let us know what you think. We think it's pretty cool!

Wild to think that with everything going on, Apple’s about to get on stage in two weeks and confidently say “Here’s a new iOS design.”

Yes, these videos are real.
I have mixed feelings over exposing the United States' most secret superweapon but they used it on a civilian airliner.
They've cracked gravity, solved fusion, and now they have coherent plasma drones that can create formations using magnet inversion.
There's also a lot of people who deserve to be vindicated especially the engineers who have been saying all this for decades.
