Introducing Honest Thumbnails A Chrome Extension to unslop YouTube thumbnails with stills from the video. Brings back the early 2010s vibe of Youtube where not everything was about clickbait. While looking into how @karpathy's HackerTube works, I learnt that YouTube has a CDN that provides still frames from the following chunks ¼, ½, ¾ of each video. So as you can imagine, it was only a matter of time until Claude turned this into a Chrome Extension. Honestly, it took me longer to make the icon than it took Claude to write the code. Open Source and MIT. Fork it, steal it, do whatever your heart wants with it. github.com/851-labs/honest-t…
Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5: hackertube.org/ - Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session) - Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads - Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version - HackerTube Longs ✊ A bit more on the process: I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing. Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

How did @penpotapp lose the race of the open-source Figma alternatives to OpenPencil / doop?

I still do this for every feature I work on.
notebook from 2014 or 2015 with a bunch of UI annotations wild times

Latest macOS 27.2 beta seems a bit more snappy.

Does anyone know if @paper has a plan to implement components? I'm already experimenting heavily with it, but I cannot use it at my job due to it missing components..

If Paper is Figma but AI-ready, then Elyx is Sketch's reply to that? Especially if it's launched by the founder duet. Congrats @emanuelsa!

I feel like polarization is a trait of good, opinionated software. Linear (or the process that Linear is built on) is not for everyone and that’s ok.
Linear is such a shitty software

Someone please hack @ryanvogel and release the OpenCode iOS app.

Today we're launching Desert Ant Labs: a European frontier AI lab building on-device intelligence. 18 models across audio, vision, and text. SDKs for Swift, Kotlin, and JavaScript. No tokens. No logins. Nothing leaves the device. desertant.com

That's one of the places where you'd expect the back button, @sketch.

I'm selling ad space on free compute tokens for developers. freecompute.org How it works? People signup to use free compute tokens, and when they'll work on their projects, each top-bidder in a dev category at the time will get their product recommended by the AI.

I know it’s Friday, so I’ll relaunch this on Monday / Tuesday too. Obviously inspired by @jonathan_wilke, @damonchen, @julesvcode and many others.

So I jailbreaked my Opal C1. I remember I paid like $300 on this thing and got zero updates in the past 16-20 months. Their app is heavy, wasting 30-50% CPU, focus is not working. It's called Nopal Camera (for now). Here's the changelist:

I wanted to address a few of my daily pain points with it: - exaggerated heat - bootloader crashes (was on 0.15, now on 0.28) - their 3A pipeline was good, but I felt Apple's is better, so the image is leaning toward the Apple look. - host app and their core service was burning CPU. - useless features like hand gestures removed, now the camera idles better. - lower latency in general. I'll still daily this thing for a while, and I'll probably put up a page with the firmware and software for macOS, Windows and Linux. Oh, I'm still deciding on Slopeal, Copeal, or Nopal as the names. I intend no harm on the awesome Opal team, but the C1 reached end of life after 12 months.
