During the #AI session, Ms. @naadomnkoa (@Penplusbytes) walked us through their โConnecting Citizens to Parliamentโ project, which is an AI-powered tool listens to parliamentary debates, tags every ministerial promise by sector, and turns them into simple infographics, SMS alerts, and social posts.
Citizens on the ground then track progress and send real-time feedback, closing the loop between Parliament and the people.

By 2024 it reached over 500,000 people, helping communities compare party platforms and hold leaders to their word.

Ms. @Athi_Saba of @Code4Africaโs iLAB explained how her team uses AI, natural-language processing, and open-source investigation across 26 countries to map the information landscapes that shape public debates; from elections and vaccine hesitancy to climate narratives.
She highlighted their work training CSOs and media organizations in digital investigation tools and data analysis, so they can track disinformation, monitor public spending, and engage communities with evidence.
Ms. Athandiwe also pointed out key challenges: limited digital literacy among policymakers and #civilsociety, the exclusion of African languages and perspectives from many AI models, and risks of government surveillance.
Her call to action: build collaborative, hybrid #tech solutions with community champions, strengthen digital skills from grassroots to the @_AfricanUnion level, and ensure African CSOs are part of every step in designing and deploying #AI tools.
