Currently, unpaid carers lose their entitlement to the benefit when they earn just 1p over the threshold. But this is set to change, the Government has just announced. See Martin's instant reaction plus more info: moneysavingexpert.com/news/2…

The BBC has agreed to pay £400,000 to an award-winning Jewish documentary-maker who alleged she was subjected to antisemitism and pushed out of the corporation after October 7. Lucie Kon, 57, spent 22 years at the BBC and worked on programmes including Panorama, Today, BBC Breakfast and Storyville. Films she commissioned or helped produce won an Oscar, Emmy and Bafta. Kon says her treatment changed dramatically after the Hamas attacks. She alleges colleagues described Zionists like her as “evil”, argued that Israel should be called terrorist if Hamas was, and told her to consider what had driven Hamas to carry out the massacre. When she proposed a documentary about October 7, Kon says she was told she was “too partial” to oversee it because she was Jewish. She subsequently filed a formal grievance, but a BBC investigation rejected her complaint. Kon says she was then kept away from work for months. During a restructuring, her position was made redundant and she failed to secure the similar role replacing it. She launched unfair-dismissal proceedings. The BBC has now agreed substantial compensation, reported as £400,000, without admitting liability or accepting that Kon suffered antisemitism. Kon says Jewish employees still at the corporation continue to face hostility and feel unable to identify openly as Jewish or Zionist.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The monumental eastern entrance to Roman Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv), Bulgaria. A broad paved street led from the gate into the city, lined with Corinthian colonnades and shops. The gate incorporated an earlier honorary arch from Hadrian's reign, likely erected to mark the emperor's visit to the city. When the lower city was fortified under Marcus Aurelius (reign 161-180 CE), the arch was incorporated into the new defences. In the 4th century AD, a monumental eastern gate was built on the same site, opening onto the road to Byzantium. Read more in my new article for @whencyclopedia: worldhistory.org/article/300…

Private George McIntosh, of 8th Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment was laid to rest this week alongside one of his comrades at a burial service organised by MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC). The service took place at our Loos British Cemetery Extension. David Royle, CWGC Recoveries and Ceremonies Manager said: “Nearly 110 years after they fell in action, and less than a mile from where they were recovered, it is a privilege to lay these two Bedfordshire Regiment soldiers to rest with the care and dignity they deserve. We are proud to have worked alongside the JCCC to restore Private George McIntosh’s name, and although the identity of the second soldier remains known only unto God, he is no longer lost or forgotten. Both men now rest among their comrades ensuring future generations can pay their respects and remember their stories in perpetuity.” Discover more on our website🔗 Image: Crown Copyright

Tuesday morning 06:50hrs I was walking to work. Suddenly, a cyclist attempted to pass me on the pavement & went into the road, catching a pedal on the kerb. They went Alpha over Tango, losing headphones & vape. Had the facking audacity to say 'watch where you're walking'! 😲 1/2

After I'd established there were no injuries, I politely reminded the cyclist that they perhaps should be on the road, with lights. Having returned the scattered headphones 🎧 & vape, fixing the rear mudguard I resumed my journey. There was not a word of thanks. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 😐

It an ethical minefield. Perhaps @InstituteArch has guidance, or a view on this?
Museums have been reviewing how they display human remains after updated ethical guidance from the International Council of Museums encouraged institutions to place greater emphasis on dignity and respect for the deceased. Find out more via BBC Scotland News: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c862…

19 October 1942 Winter has begun to arrive in earnest and it is worse than I thought it would be. Not the cold itself — I expected the cold — but the combination: cold plus hunger plus exhaustion plus the lice and the wounds that won't clean properly and the position that shifts slightly every night as we reinforce and repair and the Germans shift theirs, so you can never quite assume that what was true yesterday is true today. The accumulation. I stood at the firing position this morning for four hours and by the third hour my feet and hands felt completely numb. I kept moving them to maintain the circulation, heel to toe, heel to toe, and stamping when I could without making noise. Korolev was at the adjacent position and I watched him between scans of the field. He is reading less. He sits with the Pushkin but does not often open it. He seems changed - more so than the rest of us. More withdrawn and ground down by it all.
