Excited to release new repo: nanochat! (it's among the most unhinged I've written). Unlike my earlier similar repo nanoGPT which only covered pretraining, nanochat is a minimal, from scratch, full-stack training/inference pipeline of a simple ChatGPT clone in a single, dependency-minimal codebase. You boot up a cloud GPU box, run a single script and in as little as 4 hours later you can talk to your own LLM in a ChatGPT-like web UI. It weighs ~8,000 lines of imo quite clean code to: - Train the tokenizer using a new Rust implementation - Pretrain a Transformer LLM on FineWeb, evaluate CORE score across a number of metrics - Midtrain on user-assistant conversations from SmolTalk, multiple choice questions, tool use. - SFT, evaluate the chat model on world knowledge multiple choice (ARC-E/C, MMLU), math (GSM8K), code (HumanEval) - RL the model optionally on GSM8K with "GRPO" - Efficient inference the model in an Engine with KV cache, simple prefill/decode, tool use (Python interpreter in a lightweight sandbox), talk to it over CLI or ChatGPT-like WebUI. - Write a single markdown report card, summarizing and gamifying the whole thing. Even for as low as ~$100 in cost (~4 hours on an 8XH100 node), you can train a little ChatGPT clone that you can kind of talk to, and which can write stories/poems, answer simple questions. About ~12 hours surpasses GPT-2 CORE metric. As you further scale up towards ~$1000 (~41.6 hours of training), it quickly becomes a lot more coherent and can solve simple math/code problems and take multiple choice tests. E.g. a depth 30 model trained for 24 hours (this is about equal to FLOPs of GPT-3 Small 125M and 1/1000th of GPT-3) gets into 40s on MMLU and 70s on ARC-Easy, 20s on GSM8K, etc. My goal is to get the full "strong baseline" stack into one cohesive, minimal, readable, hackable, maximally forkable repo. nanochat will be the capstone project of LLM101n (which is still being developed). I think it also has potential to grow into a research harness, or a benchmark, similar to nanoGPT before it. It is by no means finished, tuned or optimized (actually I think there's likely quite a bit of low-hanging fruit), but I think it's at a place where the overall skeleton is ok enough that it can go up on GitHub where all the parts of it can be improved. Link to repo and a detailed walkthrough of the nanochat speedrun is in the reply.

Did you know... GB wastes £180,000 every hour switching off wind turbines and overpaying gas generators to switch on. That's £380,583,681 so far this year! wastedwind.energy <-- see how much we waste each day on this site by @robhawkes

Your periodic reminder that England, a windswept nation with more potential for onshore wind power than almost anywhere else in the world (other than Scotland), banned new onshore wind farms in 2017.

#Brexit delivered 5% blow to UK economy and yet politicians still offer no hope of an exit from Brexit! ⬇️ Britain’s economy is 5% smaller than it would have been if the country had chosen to stay in the EU. ⬇️A sharp hit to UK goods trade, weaker business investment and a steep increase in non-EU migrants coming to Britain, who study rather than work, have held back economic growth. ⬇️Analysts at the American investment bank said that “the UK has significantly underperformed other advanced economies since the 2016 EU referendum, with lower growth and higher inflation”. ⬇️It estimated that since 2016, consumer prices had leapt 🔺 by 31% in Britain. In the USA and the eurozone they had increased by 27% and 24% respectively, it said. ⬇️Greater trade frictions had raised the cost of goods exchange, putting upward pressure on prices, Goldman said. The bank’s experts said their “analysis shows that lower EU immigration has likely played a role in exacerbating labour market tightness and thus contributed to the UK’s higher inflation rates since 2016. ⬇️ “EU immigrants tended to have high labour market participation rates, as many of them entered the UK specifically to work. By contrast, many recent arrivals are students, meaning that immigration may be playing less of a role in boosting labour supply than the headline numbers suggest.” ⬇️Since the vote to leave the EU, the volume of European citizens travelling to Britain has plummeted. However, this reduction had been outpaced by a leap in non-EU migration to the UK, taking total net migration in 2022 to a record 745,000. Last month the Office for National Statistics said that net migration would contribute to raising the UK population to 74 million by 2036. ⬇️Although the change in migration flows had contributed to short-term inflationary pressures, Goldman said that a bigger share of migrants now coming to Britain were highly skilled, which would “have some long-run benefits in terms of boosting productivity”. ⬇️Investment levels since 2016 had been “weak”, Goldman said, thanks to “prolonged uncertainty around the ultimate form of Brexit”. Nevertheless, the bank’s analysts noted that “with this uncertainty now largely resolved, some of the weakness of investment might reverse, consistent with stronger investment in recent quarters”. ⬇️Economists have highlighted that Britain’s economic growth rate has slowed markedly since the 2008 global financial crisis as a result of meagre productivity improvements. These have been attributed to a slowdown in private and public sector investment. And @CharlesTannock your tweet made it to the @thetimes 👏 thetimes.co.uk/article/2637e… – at South West, England

I noticed a slight mistake in the command paper fig 1 on page 4. Should be a green tick for "Freedom of movement" for Northern Ireland? Those born in Northern Ireland can claim Irish citizenship if their parents are either British or Irish, and therefore have FoM privileges.

Brexit means bureaucracy: 🚢New non-tariff barriers to trade with our closest neighbours, making imports more expensive and adding delays 🛂Loss of freedom to live, work, study, retire across our continent. Now requires expensive visas 🚶‍♂️Longer queues at borders for travellers
Jeez. Even I can’t believe how much bull**** Health Minister Andrea Leadsom just told @SkyNews viewers about the benefits of Brexit. Will this lunacy never stop! If you think facts actually matter RT this widely

3 ideas to try: 1️⃣ Eliminate Stamp Duty 🚫📜, introduce Land Value Tax 💸🌍 for fairer, more efficient land use. 2️⃣ Start Community Land Auctions 🏘️🔨 for transparent, optimal land allocation. 3️⃣ Simplify planning with clear zoning 📐🏗️ for faster, predictable development.
NEW: we don’t reflect enough on how severe the housing crisis is, and how it has completely broken the promise society made to young adults. The situation is especially severe in the UK, where the last time house prices were this unaffordable was in ... 1876.

⚡️ There are 234 GW of potential Energy Storage System projects on the National Grid TEC register, many will be batteries🔋 like the ones @TeslaOwnersUK visited today. 📊 Here's the data broken down by year and project status. Data from @NationalGridESO TEC Register.
I must admit today was epic to see what the @Tesla_Megapack and @Harmony_Energy_ team are doing to support the UKs transition to sustainable energy. This one site (they have many more) provides 196MWh of battery storage, with a peak output of 98MW (this is enough to provide 300,000 homes with power for 2 hours at max load). This site stores excess wind/cheap/green power, improves our grid reliability, helps to flatten peaks of demand/excess and helps our country become less reliant on other countries or more importantly dirty limited fossil fuels. We as a country/world need far more of this tech! And it was incredible to hear @tesla provide a 20 year warranty on these LFP (Zero Cobalt) packs, they guarantee a certain level of capacity over that period and provide full support onsite when required. Many Megapack sites supposedly make a profit so quickly it’s a no brainer to install if you can and presumably cell manufacturing is the primary factor that slows these down…? Why isn’t more talked about this part of the Tesla business? Sounds like we urgently need a Tesla battery facility in the UK/Europe @elonmusk
