Preparations are underway for the 2026 Talent Economics Conference in Rome, organized by the Global Talent Fund and the @EIEF_Rome .
The conference brings together researchers across economics and related disciplines working at the frontier of the economics of talent: how exceptional talent develops, how it can be identified and nurtured, and how exceptional individuals shape science, innovation, and economic growth.
It begins October 21st with an Early Career Researchers Workshop, followed by the conference on October 22–23.

Congrats to 2026 Fields medalists Hong Wang, Yu Deng, John Pardon and Jacob Tsimerman!
Three won Olympiad gold as teens: Deng and Tsimerman at IMO; Pardon at IOI.
In Invisible Geniuses, @patrickgaule and I found a similar rate: 14 of 26 in 1994–2018 were former IMO medalists.

I wrote a long blot post on the economics of AI, prompted by two great workshops (Windfall and NBER), and me leaving OpenAI for METR:
TLDR: we driving in the fog.
1. There is no standard model of AI’s economic impact. Economists have been using a wide range of assumptions to model AI’s impact, there is no standard framework. There seems to me an opportunity for ambitious economists to propose deep models of AI’s impact. A promising line would concentrate on AI’s ability to find low-dimensional representations of the world.
