ALT An advert from British Rail. We see the headline "There is an alternative to commuting by rail. But could we live with it?" We see the houses of parliament in the centre, with the Elizabeth Tower (housing Big Ben) in the centre. Around it snake motorways, full of motor vehicles. It is gridlock over London. There is text, saying that every day 400,000 people commute in and out of London by BR, and putting them all on the road would increase traffic and lead to major road building. It continues "Looking at it that way, it makes a lot of sense to invest in our way". It then says "British Rail, the backbone of the nation".

ALT A vertical bar chart showing the number of passenger journeys made in each financial quarter from April 2018 to June 2024. Passenger numbers reached a peak of 461 million in October to December 2019, before the pandemic. Following this, there was a strong decline in passenger numbers across the year from April 2020 to March 2021. Since then, there has been a period of recovery, where ten of the 13 quarters since April 2021 have seen an increase in passenger numbers. The most recent value of 420 million journeys in April to June 2024, continued this trend.
