After it was all said and done and several hours where our @VIA_Rail train that hit the car would not restart, @OttFire and @OttawaPolice did a great job evacuating us all off the train and getting people with luggage and mobility issues safely into Fallowfield Station on foot.

Firefighters safely extricated a trapped occupant after their vehicle collided with a train near the Fallowfield Train Station this afternoon. At approximately 15:30, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice reporting a collision involving a train and a vehicle at the Fallowfield railway crossing. Firefighters arrived three minutes after being dispatched and confirmed the heavily damaged vehicle had come to rest approximately 75 feet from the point of impact. The lone occupant was trapped inside. Firefighters quickly stabilized the vehicle and used specialized extrication tools to remove sections of it and safely free the occupant. The occupant was extricated at 15:40 and transferred to the care of our partners at @OttawaParamedic. An investigation involving the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, Transport Canada and @OttawaPolice will now take place. Our crews cleared the scene at 16:14. #OttNews

I’m on a VIA train that just collided with a car at Fallowfield - just west of the station. We came to a sudden stop but no injuries on the train. Occupant of the car apparently survived, according to VIA employees. Chaotic situation in a neighborhood that has seen this before.

A close family friend lost his feet in Kandahar while protecting the embedded Canadian journalist from Calgary who lost her life there. He still carries the names of all the Canadians who died that day on a bracelet around his wrist. Canadians didn't fight and die in Afghanistan because al-Qaeda flew planes into the Canadian Wheat Board HQ in Winnipeg. Just to be clear.
