Before insulin, Michigan’s L.H. Newburgh proved high fat controlled severe diabetes
In 1918–1920s at the University of Michigan,
Louis Harry Newburgh and Phil Marsh treated severe diabetics with a high-fat diet instead of Allen’s starvation method. Calories came mostly from fat (often 70–90%), with just enough protein for nitrogen balance and minimal carbs. Patients who couldn’t stay sugar-free on low-calorie or high-protein regimens did so on cream, butter, bacon, eggs, meat, and a few non-starchy vegetables—no bread, no sugar.
They published the results in 1920–1923: glycosuria controlled, blood sugar lowered, and no dangerous acidosis in the majority of cases. Fat was not the villain the textbooks claimed. Insulin arrived in 1922 and the approach was largely set aside, but the clinical data still stand: when carbohydrate is restricted, fat supplies the energy without driving the hyperglycemia.
The same pattern shows up whenever people drop the foods that raise glucose and eat the animal fats that don’t. Newburgh already documented it a century ago.

In June 1965 a 27-year-old Scot weighing 456lb stopped eating, didn't start again for 382 days, and the fat he was carrying kept him alive for every one of them.
Angus Barbieri worked in his father's fish and chip shop in Tayport, across the Tay from Dundee. He had eaten his way past 32 stone. He checked himself into Maryfield Hospital for what his doctors intended as a short fast.
It went well. He felt fine. He asked to carry on.
The doctors agreed, warily, and let him go home, provided he came back in regularly for blood and urine tests. He lived on tea, coffee, sparkling water and vitamins. No food. A week became a month. A month became a season. The weight came off at about three-quarters of a pound a day. Day 100 came and went, then 200, then 300, with the hospital checking his blood every step and waiting for something to break.
Nothing did.
For long stretches his blood sugar sat at around 30mg per 100ml, about a third of normal, the kind of reading that has junior doctors reaching for a drip. He went about his days perfectly lucid.
On 11 July 1966 he sat down to his first meal in over a year: a boiled egg and a slice of bread with butter. He weighed 180lb, under 13 stone. He had lost 276lb, very nearly 20 stone, and it went into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest fast in history. Five years on he was still around 14 stone, and he lived until 1990. His doctors wrote him up in 1973 under the driest title in medicine: Features of a successful therapeutic fast of 382 days' duration.
His brain kept working the whole year, which is the part the textbooks of the day had no answer for.
In 1967, in Boston, George Cahill's team supplied one. They ran fine tubes into the blood vessels draining the brains of three obese patients five weeks into a fast and measured what the brain was burning. It had switched to ketones, made in the liver from body fat, as its main fuel. The organ every textbook said ran only on glucose was running on fat, and running happily.
So every thought Barbieri had that year was powered by the fat around his middle.
A human body carries months of fuel and a brain built to use it. It was shaped by two million years of hunts that came good one week and failed the next, and it treats an empty plate as an ordinary Tuesday.
Angus Barbieri had 382 of them.

The position of the US government and the scientific community is that ultraprocessed food consumption is highly tied to our chronic disease crisis that is killing Americans and bankrupting our country.
'THIS IS PROOF': Consuming ultra-processed foods increases the risk of brain damage, according to a new study highlighted by @DrMarcSiegel:
Middle-aged adults who eat high amounts of ultra-processed foods are 40% more likely to show small areas of brain damage on MRIs:
"They looked at MRIs of the brain and found areas... where blood flow is impacted directly, leading to silent strokes... development of vascular dementia in people that ate a ton of ultra-processed foods.
We're talking about hydrogenated oils. We're talking about processed sugars. We're talking about additives, preservatives, chemicals, empty foods—not whole foods."

Replying to @KirkPWatson @AustinAirport
Austin's airport told the City Council in 2023 that a utility project would cost about $312 million, then put it out to bid at just $120 million, and only two companies applied.
Now the city wants to raise the winner's contract to $344 million, with no new competitive bidding and no public deliberation of where the extra $224 million goes.
It's on Thursday's consent agenda, so it can pass without discussion.

The forces in Austin that want to hide wasteful spending are the same who lie about Prop I (and Prop Q).
Have you heard of the Comprehensive Efficiency Assessment Program?
What about the Independent Affordability and
Efficiency Initiative?
What's in common? Efficiency.
The Don't DOGE Austin crowd is backing the Comprehensive Efficiency Assessment Program. Yep, that's the ordinance. They don't *actually* think efficiency is a scary word when they have a hand in writing the guardrails.
What sets these two apart? Affordability.
The Vote Aye on Prop I crowd is backing the Independent Affordability and
Efficiency Initiative. Yep, that's the charter amendment. These voters want to protect the most vulnerable and next generation.
‼️BREAKING TEXAS: FAR-LEFT LUNATIC JAMES TALARICO LOCKS IN THE ISLAMIC BLOC
James Talarico - the radical progressive Democrat already campaigning as “the next U.S. Senator from Texas” - just sat down for a closed Muslim community meet-and-greet in Irving.
At the park it was a Who’s Who of radicals:
Muslim Mayor Amir Omar of Richardson (the first Muslim mayor of a major North Texas suburb)…..Councilman Fahad Ahmed of Irving…Pakistani-born state Rep. Salman Bhojani and Nima Bhojani, plus others, several of them openly wearing Palestinian keffiyehs while Talarico took their questions and courted their organized vote.
This is the same Talarico who:
• Partnered with Emgage Action (CAIR-linked) and publicly thanked their operatives for writing his bills.
• Pushed HB 2039 to strip explicit naming of Christian ministers and Jewish rabbis from marriage law so Imams would sit front and center, advertising it with “As-salamu alaykum, y’all.”
• Said he learned “as much about my faith from Salman’s tradition, from the Islamic mystics” as from Christian authors while elevating Bhojani as the model of multi-“religious” democracy.
• Equated Christian nationalists with the Taliban and al-Qaeda as equal “extremists” and claimed Christians, Muslims, and Jews all worship the same God.
Bhojani himself is the Pakistani-born Democrat that I have documented for years pushing Pakistan Day recognition, taxpayer-funded halal mandates in schools, “Combat Islamophobia” days, Emgage events, and advice on how to deal with ICE - the same pattern of incremental institutional capture she calls the Pakistanification of Texas.
Talarico is a far-left radical who votes against supporting law enforcement, backs gender-mutilation surgeries for minors, and pushes open-border policies, all while smiling for the Islamic voting bloc that delivers city councils and legislative seats in Irving, Richardson, and beyond.
The hard-left gets the disciplined Islamic vote and demographic power.
The Islamic networks get a progressive who opens the doors of the Texas legislature and now wants the U.S. Senate.
This is the Red-Green Alliance in plain sight: mutual use for power, one meet-and-greet at a time.
Texas is under attack! Republicans better vote like their lives depend on it
🚨BREAKING TEXAS: VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT - STOP JAMES "JIHADI" TALARICO
Texans must turn out in force for Ken Paxton or watch this state become the next Michigan-style Islamic/Marxist experiment.
James Talarico is the smiling radical Democrat in the Capitol photo standing next to a sharia-adherent operative in a hijab, both holding HB 2039 like a trophy.
In March 2021, he posted:
“Texas has the largest population of Muslims in the country.
Today I introduced legislation to add Imams to the list of religious officials who can perform marriage ceremonies…
As-salamu alaykum, y’all.”
The population claim is a lie (typical for him). The real goal is clear: hand more institutional power to his Islamic allies. Allahu Akbar Texas!
He publicly thanked the controversial Muslim activists who wrote the bill and singled out radical Insiya Aziz of the terror-tied Muslim advocacy group Emgage Action.
Aziz had clerked for a foreign Islamic terrorist group - CAIR’s national office - and pushed hardline Shia causes through the American Muslim Bar Association, and testified for Emgage.
Emgage is the political arm of a Muslim Brotherhood influence operation co-founded by Khurrum Wahid, a longtime CAIR legal advisor who made his name defending clients in national-security cases - including jihadi Sami Al-Arian.
Jihadi Al-Arian was the University of South Florida professor who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide services to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the State Department-designated terrorist group behind suicide bombings.
He served prison time and was deported. That is the pedigree of the organization Talarico partnered with.
Aziz’s own X banner even shows a nighttime Shia Muharram/Ashura street procession - the kind of mass takeover with banners and public self-flagellation that we have been documenting taking over the streets of Texas.
(See below - this will be coming to your neighborhood soon, Talarico will make sure of it!)
🚨HB 2039 itself: Texas law already allowed any religious organization to authorize its own officials.
The bill stripped the specific Christian and Jewish language and elevated the open-ended clause so Imams sat front and center.
DID YOU HEAR THAT TEXAS!? HE IS ADVOCATING FOR THE ISLAMIZATION OF YOUR STATE!
This is Classic incremental Islamic playbook: institutional recognition first, then schools, zoning, funding, and parallel communities.
Talarico, their evil puppet, keeps throwing the door wide open....
TEXAS - MUST CHOOSE ONE
FREEDOM (PAXTON)
or
ISLAM (TALARICO)
You cannot have both.

AUSTIN MAN caught with the keys to a stolen BMW wrapped around his genitals -- while out on bond, and a week after he broke into the third home of his summer burglary spree.
Giovanni Cruz has racked up 25 Travis County cases since 2022.
He was arrested for burglary three times, and every one of those felonies was downgraded to a misdemeanor.
He got arrested on drug charges repeatedly, and DA Jose Garza's office usually didn't file charges at all. An assault charge was dismissed. So was a felony theft. HEB security tackled him in the parking lot with $95 in stolen groceries, and prosecutors declined that one too.
In May, police found him asleep on a vacant house's porch next to a giant NO TRESPASSING sign, with meth straws at his feet. He bonded out.
While he was still out on bond, he was charged with burglarizing a home on July 8, another on July 13, and another on August 25.
Last month police caught him on the same street going in and out of a stolen BMW. He told officers he didn't have the keys. They were wrapped around his genitals. He was charged with misdemeanor trespass and bonded out again.
25 cases. 12 dismissed or never filed. Zero jury trials. His longest sentence was 60 days.
