Being a transit advocate in America is hard because this is genuinely good news, but it costs $600 million a mile for a train that runs on the street. France is building fully automated, grade-separated metro for half that.
The capital of American car culture is now building more transit than any other city in America. Los Angeles just broke ground on a nearly $4 BILLION light-rail line through the San Fernando Valley: • 6.7 miles • 11 new stations • Connections to Amtrak, Metrolink and the G Line • Access to roughly 150,000 jobs across the region Rail service is returning to Van Nuys Boulevard for the first time in more than 70 years. Los Angeles isn’t abandoning the car overnight but it is building a future where driving is no longer the only option.

It’s easy to tell when you’ve left the boundaries of SLC and entered Millcreek when you see things like this

We’re so lucky to have this in Salt Lake
Having a train that takes you directly to the airport is genuinely one of the top 10 things a city can offer. No expensive taxis, no sitting in traffic, no begging someone to drop you off. Just get on the train and arrive at the airport. Every major city should have this.

While we’re at it can we get rid of this corny art installation
We’re excited to share the next phase of what’s coming to downtown Salt Lake City. The new district will have something for everyone. It’ll have a new convention center, updated Abravanel Hall, new art museum, transformed Delta Center, Live Nation venue, strong local vibe combined with new iconic brands, hotel, housing, restaurants, and a central pedestrian walkway connecting the whole downtown from City Creek all the way to the new front door of the Delta Center.

These plans have so much sauce. So stoked for downtown

Lmao
Years ago, friend in St. Paul had a bike lane built in front of her house. It was on a boulevard across from a park. Small driveway. Bike lane took ALL parking. From that point on, she could not have more than two people over. She eventually sold her house, mostly due to this.

I’ve been into meteorology since I was a young buck—is this the first time ever that an organized tropical depression has been forecast to reach Salt Lake? Absolutely wild stuff
Don’t see this every day! This shows Hurricane Rachel reaching SLC Monday morning as a Tropical Depression. 🤯

All the more remarkable that through an economic boom Salt Lake rents continue to fall. Turns out building a ton of housing works

My 81-year-old immigrant grandma still rides the bus every day. For her sake, I couldn’t agree more.
Enforcing fares is one of the most pro-working-class things you can possibly do in a city. Everything downstream improves. Transit becomes safer, more reliable, and ultimately faster. Massive improvement in people’s daily lives who depend on transit to put food on the table.

Provo by a long shot! (although this is just because the Wasatch Front is, unfortunately, divided into three separate metropolitan areas)
by popular demand -- the 30 most republican metro areas in the country

Coolest and most underrated aspect of Salt Lake’s urban form: the enormous park strips. Makes walking such a better experience

Just a few feet wider than the common 132' right-of-way in Salt Lake City, but able to move 100,000 people/hour. Location: Av. Diagonal (Pg. de St. Joan to Parc de Les Glories), Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain Photo Credit: IMM DesignLab
