For most people reading the OP, the advice isn’t good. In fact, it might be harmful. You’ll probably end up with sub par consumption, but of course there’s always a chance of getting lucky, but that misses the point of developing taste. The OP is for folks who have developed some sense of their taste, but lack courage to engage with and understand it. If you’re earlier in your journey, IMO the better thing to do is to understand the algorithm. Understand what you’re actively being sold and why you like it. Unpack why “mainstream” has the reach it does. Understand why you and people broadly enjoy something is a prereq. Then go deep on exploring niches. The detours are about discovering and revealing your underlying preferences and engaging with them-but this requires a lot of paying attention to yourself vs what people tell you-because people will tell you conflicting bits of advice re: how to feel about something. It takes courage and love to see and appreciate yourself. You can outsource these assessments to the people you want to be respected by, but recognize you’re letting their taste shape you rather than discover your own taste, and frankly you’re likely not interested in taste to begin with. An observation I’ve seen re: taste is they’re able to judge for what something is, and can better disregard the baggage pre-judgements. Christopher Nolan liking the Avengers or Bourdain having a soft spot for KFC mac and cheese are examples that come to mind. If you’ve read this far-thanks! I wanted to get a reaction out of my head, but since this is low reach, I also didnt want to edit this too much.

Love this. Building on @vixsheikh’s post, this is one way to exhibit a high agency mindset. Focus on what you can control rather than blaming users. Claiming ownership shifts the question: what can I do to improve or better yet, prevent this?
If you’ve been at it long enough, you’ll know that “user error” is simply a class of design problems. Philosophically and practically speaking, you are much better off treating user errors as your errors more than theirs. Even if it genuinely their mistake.

Founders often ask: "How do I get my team to care more?" But you can’t guilt someone into caring. You can only inspire it by being real about what you care about and why it matters to you. Far better to extend an invitation to the party than to command someone to attend.

nice tips from @romanshamin_en who really gets into the nitty gritty details here
I’m impressed. AI cut my design work from weeks to days. Recently, I had the chance to work on a cool dataviz project at Evil Martians as a product designer, and I leaned heavily on AI tools throughout. Here’s a breakdown of the design tasks where AI made a big difference.

Pixel for pixel this had some of the most business logic complexity and iteration relative to its size than I had guessed at the onset…
