🚨 MINORITY BUSINESS OWNERS ARE SUING MAMDANI TO STOP NYC FROM OPENING CITY-RUN GROCERY STORES DESIGNED TO CUT FOOD COSTS FOR STRUGGLING FAMILIES. Yeah. Thats where we are now. On AUG. 24, the newly formed and JEWISH-LED MULTICULTURAL BUSINESS COALITION, MBC, filed two lawsuits trying to stop NYC’s plan for five city-owned grocery stores offering staple foods around 30% below prevailing prices. Read that again. A business coalition is going to court over stores meant to make groceries cheaper. MBC argues city-supported stores would unfairly hurt immigrant-owned bodegas and supermarkets. Fair argument? Partly. But now look at how this group came together, and how damn fast it happened. MBC launched MAY 7, 2026. Its stated mission was to unite HISPANIC, ASIAN, AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN, MIDDLE EASTERN, JEWISH, SOUTH ASIAN and immigrant business orgs into one much larger political and economic bloc. One of its founding components was the ORTHODOX JEWISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, OJCC. DUVI HONIG, FOUNDER and CEO of OJCC, became secretary of the new coalition. HONIG described the strategy as bringing dozens of ethnic chambers together so they could speak with one voice when dealing with govt. That isnt some random networking club. Thats organized political leverage. MARK JAFFE also holds a major role. JAFFE, PRESIDENT of the GREATER NY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, serves as MBC’s general counsel and has become one of the major legal voices fighting MAMDANI’S grocery plan. The important connection here isnt anyone’s religion. Its the institutional network. OJCC joined Hispanic, Black, Asian, Caribbean and other merchant assocs under one umbrella, creating a broader front with alot more political weight than any one group would have seperately. And the timing is wild. THIS COALITION WAS JUST CREATED. Within weeks of launching, reports described it preparing to fight Mamdani’s grocery proposal AND his $30 minimum-wage plan. Chairman Frank Garcia said the group secured major financial backing for lobbying and ads. He also warned politicians there could be electoral consequences if their concerns were ignored. Three months later? Lawsuits. That escalated fast. Now, their legal argument isnt completely ridiculous. A private grocery store paying rent, utilities, taxes, payroll and wholesale prices obviously faces a disadvantage against a city-backed competitor receiving subsidies. But here is where this gets ugly. NYers are getting hammered by food prices. The city wants to use public resources to make milk, eggs, produce, meat and other basic foods cheaper. And this newly formed coalition wants the stores stopped before they even open. So now you have to ask. Is this mainly about protecting immigrant-owned businesses? Or is this a newly created lobbying machine protecting its members from cheaper competition while wrapping the fight in civil-rights language? Their private motives arent proven. Their political activity is. MBC formed in May. It gained financial backing fast. It started opposing major Mamdani policies almost immediately. It threatened political consequences. Now its in court trying to stop cheaper govt-supported groceries. Follow the orgs. Follow the money. Follow the timeline.
