Baby girl (aka Little One) has arrived! What started with a routine appointment led us to rush to the hospital for me to be induced and eventually deliver, but she’s here and is perfect. My friends and family were asked to send prayers for her, I’d love that from you too.

What could be more progressive than wanting to improve education outcomes and life opportunities for disadvantaged children?

As long as I live, I will never, ever get over how losing twenty 6- and 7-year-old children days before Christmas wasn’t the end of guns in this country.

Update: I read Bedtime for Frances, went over how the clock works and how she needs to stay in bed, gave her hugs, left the room, and …she passed out just like that.

We rather spontaneously converted our daughter’s bed from the crib to a toddler bed. Please send any tips and tricks for how to help the transition go smoothly. I just got a night light that changes from red to green when she is allowed to get out of bed.

IMHO schools in states that depend on ADA funding (Average Daily Attendance, this includes California) have absolutely no business pressuring families to attend school. Every one of their reasons is clouded by their need to have students in seats every day in order to get funds.

I don't think it's at all a coincidence that AI got super popular right after everyone had Covid-19 a bunch of times

New lesson learned: a handheld bottle does not hold enough water for a 13 mile run on a 90 degree day. Ask me how I know.

Can someone out there in teacher land explain what happened with Teachers Pay Teachers?

We got a smoker/grill. Send us your favorite recipes and tips, especially for anyone on low sodium diets, and for any plant-based/veggie options as well…. Can that even be done? Can you put veggies in a smoker?

I think one of the biggest issues facing public education right now is that most of the employees are not satisfied in their jobs. It’s really challenging to run a successful organization with that many unhappy people. And at the end of the day, the students lose out. Start by addressing this and things might possibly get better. But any other efforts will fall short if the staff are unhappy.

I had a deloading week and ran 7 miles for my long run today… While I enjoyed the run and considered it easy, I had to stop and give myself credit for building up mileage again, and for how long I’ve come in the past few years.

The transition from being called Mama to being called “Mom” has begun, and I don’t like it. 🥺

If the response to a student throwing a chair is to ask whether the teacher made the lesson engaging enough, I'd like to know how boring a faculty meeting has to get before the same logic applies.

Schools, this is the way. We don’t need more popcorn, bad chocolate, or tacky wrapping paper with a cut going to a company. Just… let people give and be done with it.
My daughter's middle school has the most direct fundraising strategy and I'm here for it. We can skip the whole charade.

My town just released their police stats for September, and e-bike related calls increased by 218.8% in September 2026 compared to September 2025. That’s quite a jump.

This is your daily reminder that language in children's books is significantly richer than language in our daily conversations with children. If you want your kids to have a large vocabulary going into school, you must read to them.
If I seem grumpy lately it's because I'm reading piles of recent national surveys about why parents don't read to their kids for my dissertation and... Y'all. 😐 "My child prefers screentime." "I find it boring." "It's useless."

It’s not fun getting bad news on MyChart about test results and then having to wait for the actual doctor to chime in.

I can now say I’m 46 with a 2 year old. I am happy to say that we both celebrated my birthday with a long nap.
