Neobanks that experienced exploits/breaches in the last 30 days ↓
Aug 28: @avici - $500,859 drained
Aug 28: @useTria - $431,945 drained
Sep 11: @ether_fi - 15.45 ETH stolen
Sep 12 @Revolut - Customer data breach
Sep 24: @payy_link - $ ?
We gotta fix onchain security asap.
P.S. Worth mentioning that all losses from those projects were reimbursed.
Today at 4:21 UTC Payy’s bridge contract on Ethereum was exploited and drained of its full balance.
Investigation is ongoing and we are following incident response guidelines.
While we investigate, all Payy Network transactions are paused including deposits, withdrawals, transfers and card transactions.
We will continue to communicate updates here.

Globally, state after state is hurtling towards digital surveillance just at a time when we need to be having a discussion about how to protect ourselves from the surveillance capabilities of the future. Here, Switzerland. tuta.com/blog/switzerland-su…

One of the underappreciated secrets to winning in any new sector is: just stick around.
If you just stick around long enough, the losers blow up early. Then the winners retire early. So eventually you win by just doing the work when nobody else can or wants to.
When people ask me how we built Dragonfly to became one of the biggest VCs in crypto, this is mostly the answer. We didn’t start with a big brand or any obvious advantages. Few people in the crypto world knew who I was before Dragonfly.
But we just kept doing the work. While others got too rich and retired, or just got bored or distracted, we kept doing the work. For 7 years.
It’s kind of that simple.

Community Update: #2
Upgrade.
Bridging from UTXO chains (in this case Zcash testnet) has moved from payment-bearing inscriptions encoding instructions to a JSON-RPC based approach where users no longer need to run Koan's client software or even a webapp interfacing with it.
Now it's as simple as making an HTTP POST request to a validator's RPC endpoint, which returns a deposit address and information to verify the address is under validator set management, plus validator information including signed attestations for verification and dispute purposes.
Validators leverage mempool analysis to process transactions prior to confirmation, prioritizing user experience. Negotiating transactions with validators offchain and facilitating deposits to freshly generated pseudorandom addresses improves confidentiality - bridging transactions are indistinguishable from others.
This positions Koan not just as Zcash to EVM bridging infrastructure but toward its greater vision as a developer-friendly primitive for permissionless interoperability between blockchains of different paradigms.

Without using credibly neutral infrastructure like blockchains (or TEEs with caveats) these kinds of networks — no matter how well-intended — will end up extractive walled gardens.
“We’ll host it or you can host it yourself” is what happened to email, as an example.
Making trustable networks for agents is completely critical, but if we want to give them great, economically abusable power (“discern between ‘good actors’ and ‘bad actors’”) we need to design them so they Can’t Be Evil — “Don’t Be Evil” didn’t work.
This is such a wild & reactionary take on what's going on here from @garrytan - for someone who is usually so well-spoken, rational, and technology-forward, I'm shocked.
Determining the identity of an agent, service, machine, computer, or other entity is a fundamental problem that needs to be addressed. The standard that @Cloudflare and friends are working on is critical to enabling a truly agentic economy - in the same way that standards like SSL/TLS paved the way for the proliferation of internet commerce in the late 90s/00s.
No one here is trying to create some kind of locked-in web experience (e.g. bullshit DRM) - they're trying to help resource owners (websites, stores, platforms) identify and discern between "good actors" and "bad actors" in a way that helps them _enable agentic workflows_ to proliferate, to enable agents to interoperate, and enable humans to be able to delegate to trusted agents in the same manner.
This is about levelling up our bot/agent abuse detection from Layer 3/4 (transport/tcp&ip) behaviour to Layer 5 (app), so when an agent on Vercel gets blocked by an ISP in Spain, they don't have to block all Vercel traffic; instead, they can be discerning about exactly which agent or app to prevent the abuse.
The work @Cloudflare is doing here is really good and coming from a good place - it's built upon existing practices (e.g., using .well-known for advertising key data) and leverages work that has been ideated for years to address issues surrounding webhooks and machine-to-machine authentication challenges.
I'm excited by the work being done here and happy to see @browserbase & @pk_iv realize how this helps them solve real challenges for their customers. This isn't some scary thing; it's just the next piece of protocol being proposed to unlock real end-user value in the same way that Cookies & TLS unlocked the trillion-dollar economy we have today on the internet.

Community Update: #1
Time for a community update on what we've been working on at @koanvm
After quietly building on Zcash infrastructure for around 2 years now, we're happy to finally share what Koan has been developing.
Bidirectional UTXO-to-EVM bridging with working atomic swaps between Zcash, Bitcoin and Litecoin, currently integrated with 16+ EVM networks including HyperEVM.
WALDO (our DevOps AI) handles node diagnostics and automated infrastructure management while our validators operate on Zcash testnet via heartbeat reporting.
Next phase involves further development of our omnichain world state system for confidential asset accounting with succinct verification across all chains.
We're building for a future where users control their privacy, giving everyone the choice between transparent and confidential transactions across all connected chains. Privacy when you want it, openness when you don't.
Thanks for following along as we build toward this vision.

I can't express how important this is. Many of us have been living for years under the threat that we, builders of tools of freedom, might be held accountable for the misuse of them by bad actors. I feel lighter today.
The DOJ must drop its case against @rstormsf.

I decided to donate $500K to @rstormsf’s legal defense. Originally, we planned to give $50K, but after what happened to me, I need to take a clear position so everyone understands what @class_lambda stands for.
I understand that the @ethereumfndn will be matching donations up to another $500K for Roman Storm’s defense, which means our contribution can have double the impact. Our team is currently moving money to execute the transaction. It should be done in the next few hours. I'm going to sleep after not sleeping for the last 48 hours.
Open source and decentralization are not just philosophical ideals. They are practical necessities for building crypto. Success in this space comes from building in the open, onboarding others, and creating movements that grow beyond the original project. That is often hard to explain to people who do not share this ethos, because we are not optimizing for the same outcomes.
Our mission is to help build the highways of the new internet in sustainable ways. Economic sustainability is one part of that, but not the only one. We also exist to counterbalance the natural pull toward centralization, a side effect of pure optimization. Centralization is easier and cheaper in the short run. If our only goal were to make money, there are far simpler ways to do it. But money, to us, is just a tool to reach our goals.
Roman’s legal defense matters because builders everywhere need to know they can push innovation forward and that the community will stand behind them when they do. The West became powerful because it embraced freedom and its innovators. Progress came from protecting those who challenged the status quo and building systems that allowed their ideas to scale. When we stop defending our innovators, we stop building the future.
The community can contribute to @rstormsf's legal defense here:

.@mert on why Zcash is his second biggest holding (after SOL):
“Fundamentally I’m interested in problems, especially very impactful ones. There’s a few generational problems in crypto.
One that I was really interested in was scalability and performance and so that’s why I started on Solana.
I think there’s a few others. One of those is ZK. And right alongside that is going to be privacy.
I think basically a world in which crypto succeeds at mass scale but privacy doesn’t, is somewhat of a failed experiment. Now you have the worst of both worlds. You have zero sovereignty and full surveillance into everything you’re doing.
I love stablecoins. They’re obviously useful in what they aim to do. But they can be frozen easier than a bank freezing your accounts. USDC is just frozen right into the contract.
That’s probably ok for most use cases but certainly not all of them and if there’s even 5% that it’s not ok for then that’s important to solve.
I think privacy is aesthetically a good problem to work on because it’s impactful and a net good.
And if you start with that premise, I basically just said ‘ok what are the solutions’, and there’s a few of them.
I think that based on a pure technical understanding, Zcash has the most proven tech. People don’t know that they basically pioneered ZK proofs on chain.
Then the core team, it’s a little complicated but there’s @ElectricCoinCo—that team is extremely competent—I met them. They mean business.
And they have very smart folks like @zooko, @ebfull working on it.
So it’s kind of a combination of impact bet and people bet.
I don’t have anything against Monero, I just think on technical merits Zcash is stronger.
And I think doing this on a single L1 also makes sense.
That’s a long answer but that’s why Zcash is my second biggest holding.”
