For all the border tensions between China and India, both countries had the maturity to agree that their soldiers could only use sticks if the situation escalates to violent clashes (they actually have an agreement on that, which both countries abide by), which obviously makes an immense difference in terms of potential casualties and prevents further escalation into a dramatic conflict. A lot of wisdom there, which more countries should heed.

Housing is an investment. And investment prices must go up. Housing is shelter. When the price of shelter goes up, people experience distress. Housing can’t be both a good investment and broadly affordable—yet we insist on both. This is the housing trap. Escape on 4-23-24.

“Get a car, loser!” (presumably so u can contribute to the same traffic gridlock we’re all stuck in) Sketch from 2019 Icelandic Lampoon show HT @ruvsjonvarp. As @bjornteits points out, the unrealistic part “is the fact that there are 2 people in the car.”

Ever notice how nearly every climate denial argument fall into just one of FIVE categories? But here's the twist: they all share ONE goal - preventing action. So don't be distracted: debunk briefly, then pivot immediately to positive, constructive solutions for a better world.

Charlie Chaplin played a dual role in "The Great Dictator," a satirical comedy-drama film released in 1940. In the film, he portrayed both Adenoid Hynkel, a parody of Adolf Hitler, and a Jewish barber who looks nearly identical to Hynkel. The film is famous for its political and social commentary, with Chaplin using humor to criticize the rise of fascism and totalitarianism in Europe during that era. The movie's final speech, delivered by Chaplin as the Jewish barber, is particularly renowned for its powerful message of hope and peace. "The Great Dictator" remains a classic in the history of cinema.

The cost of Universal Basic Income (UBI) may seem high, but when considering the replacement of 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 existing welfare programs and tax subsidies, and the savings via less crime and better health, it's a financially sound proposal aimed at alleviating chronic societal stress.

We need to stop regarding the climate emergency as a stand-alone environmental problem. Global heating, although ruinous, is not the sole symptom of our present struggling on Earth. See our climate emergency paper. Think overshoot. doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biab0…… cartoon- P. A.Jansen

A smart urban street tree canopy shouldn’t just be considered urban infrastructure… given all the many public interests supported by urban trees, they should be considered ESSENTIAL infrastructure. HT @davidlois_UNED for the graphic.

Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said." We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized. Credit: Ira Byock.

What would happen if the world cut meat and milk consumption in half? grist.org/agriculture/what-i… Cows are often described as climate change criminals because of how much planet-warming methane they burp. But there’s another problem with livestock farming that’s even worse for the climate and easier to overlook: To feed the world’s growing appetite for meat, corporations and ranchers are chopping down more forests and trampling more carbon-sequestering grasslands to make room for pastures and fields of hay. Ruminants, like cattle, sheep, and goats, need space to graze, and animal feed needs space to grow. The greenhouse gases unleashed by this deforestation and land degradation mean food systems account for one-third of the world’s human-generated climate pollution.
