Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We could get to zero if governments designed transportation systems to put safety first.

This election was about a lot of issues. But we're thrilled that 10/11 winners tonight endorsed our entire first-year platform, and that the only incumbents who won all scored between A- and A+ on our road safety report card. Vancouver made it clear: road safety matters!

Picture your commute with 11% of Vancouver’s road space gone. That’s 220 kilometres of roads and sidewalks.
It’s hard to believe, but it’s on page 10 of the Green platform, and Pete Fry is running on it. He also wants a 30 km/h speed limit on major arterials.
In a city that already struggles with gridlock, that means more time stuck in traffic for commuters, delivery drivers, tradespeople and families.
Mayor Ken Sim has a different plan: fix our roads and sidewalks, coordinate construction better, and get traffic moving again.
If you drive, bike, bus or run a business in this city, how our streets work affects your day.
Election Day is October 17.
Vote for Mayor Ken Sim and your ABC Vancouver team, and vote YES on both plebiscite questions.
Let’s keep building the change our city needs, not rip up our roads.

It's election day! We worked hard this cycle to make road safety an issue. 5 of the 7 major parties have signed on to our 10 year-one asks. If you want politicians with integrity, who make evidence based decisions and care about public safety, go vote!

Granville pedestrian zone. Car-lite Water Street. Greenways and bikeways. Community plazas.
Say goodbye to all of it if ABC is re-elected. They're telling you themselves that they are vehemently against it all.

Unlike NYC, you won't be seeing any Halloween car-free block parties for safe trick or treating in Vancouver. If you're wondering why, there's a pretty simple and disappointing answer:

NYC is opening 160 car-free (but treat-filled) streets and plazas to enjoy fun and safe fall festivities this spooky season.
Find one near you at nyc.gov/trickorstreets.

Not only is it on page 10 of the Green platform, it's also already-passed bylaw in Vancouver which you would know if you spent any time there. #vanpoli

If you think what's happening in Toronto with the bike lane removals can't happen here, remember that Ken Sim's chief of staff came online to very weirdly gloat about Stanley Park bike lane being torn out, calling it "beautiful to watch."

Watching in dismay & with solidarity for our friends in Toronto, as the province removes life-saving infrastructure.
Also a stark reminder of what can happen in Vancouver with the wrong people in charge. Already, ABC has torn out one bike lane (Stanley Park)... (1/4) 🧵
Cycling advocates continued their protest of the removal of bike lanes on Bloor Street West in Etobicoke for a third day on Thursday, with many arriving as early as 6 a.m. bit.ly/4hOpwGM
... cancelled plans for another (Broadway), and tried to remove a 3rd (Beach Ave).
Now they're promising to remove traffic calming in residential neighbourhoods, and pretending to be shocked at the City's 11% road space reallocation goal. (2/3)

“If we simply go with, ‘OK, some people are mad about this. Let’s rip it all out and never do it again' [...] Then we are not going to get to the other side of whatever growing pains there might be to a better functioning and successful project.” (1/2)

This is a strawman from @LisaDominato; no one at Vision Zero wants to abolish roads. But we're curious to know, when she says "we have to strike a balance", what's her acceptable number of deaths on our roads?

ALT City Coun. Lisa Dominato, who is running for re-election with ABC, pushed back against Vision Zero’s criticism. Dominato said the party continues to work on road safety throughout the city. “I think we have to strike a balance in the city,” said Dominato. “While we want to make sure that pedestrians and cyclists are safe on our streets, we also need to continue to support the movement of goods and people on our streets as well.”
Reminder that @MikeKlassen of ABC promised to restore the Stanley Park bike lane on 4 different occasions as far back as 2022 - needless to say they broke this promise.
ABC are making a lot of promises this election season. Why should we believe any of them?
Does reallocating 11% of road space make sense? Depends on which ABC candidate you ask... And when you ask them.
Would love a comment from @sarahkirby_yung and @LisaDominato - which side do you stand on?

The poster child for how the cynicism of politics can break someone. He used to care - we think. Now all he does is parrot the talking points of his party. Was the leading voice in making sure we don't reduce speeds on our most deadly streets.
Mayor @KenSimCity (ABC) F
We couldn't imagine a worse leader for our city. Talks endlessly about public safety, and then votes again and again to make our streets more dangerous - at least, on the rare occasion he actually shows up to council in the first place.
