The New York Times starts celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2026 with the ball drop this New Year’s Eve. For much of America’s history, The Times has been on the ground, reporting on the events that shape us — in Times Square and around the world. #NYT175 #BallDrop

I wrote for @TheAtlantic about how archivists are contending with our digital detritus — whether we'll be able to save emails, texts, Discord chats, etc and what that means for how we tell history: theatlantic.com/culture/arch…

Our colleagues at The Athletic report, write, edit stories, record podcasts, create videos, promote articles and have their work featured in The New York Times. That’s why we call on the company to recognize them as part of the Times Guild. washingtonpost.com/sports/20…

When a cat named Rayne Beau dashed into the woods of Yellowstone National Park during a camping trip in June, his owners thought they’d never see him again. But almost two months later, the Siamese cat was found more than 800 miles away. nyti.ms/4ezSndu

This 1911 book shows that taking photos of cats and furnishing them with an amusing caption was a thing long before the internet... buff.ly/3gGvkQm #InternationalCatDay

Since corporations are bad archivists (see: MTV News 🕳️), where do journalists turn to preserve their own work? First stop: The Internet Archive's @waybackmachine. And then? Well, it gets complicated, as @HanaaTameez highlights for @NiemanLab 👉 niemanlab.org/2024/07/to-pre…

Once again: Everything you think is different about the modern age is just social media. Before social media, Ivy League kids rioted over stupid stuff, but normal people just read about it in passing in the newspaper instead of arguing about it on social media for weeks.
In 1961, thousands of students rioted at Harvard and had to be dispersed by police using tear gas. The cause of the riot: the students wanted their diplomas printed in Latin not English. The riots went on for days.

This story! ❤️ Prisoners share their food and beds and build the cats little houses. In return, the cats provide something invaluable in a lockup notorious for overcrowding and squalid conditions: love, affection and acceptance.⁦⁦@jacknicas⁩ nytimes.com/2023/12/31/world…
