I wrote for @TheAtlantic about how archivists are contending with our digital detritus — whether we'll be able to save emails, texts, Discord chats, etc and what that means for how we tell history:

Today, @nytimes unveiled 32 famous framed pages in their lobby to replace its previous exhibit.
Since I've been working here, part of my job was digitally remastering famous front pages from it's archives, utilizing microfilm, negatives, original photography and other sources to rebuild pages from ground up.
Enhancing pages digitally while keeping its historical integrity so that it looks "of its time" is a hard task that takes a lot of work - but also hugely rewarding. If you're in midtown Manhattan, you should come inside and check it out!

Since corporations are bad archivists (see: MTV News 🕳️), where do journalists turn to preserve their own work?
First stop: The Internet Archive's @waybackmachine.
And then? Well, it gets complicated, as @HanaaTameez highlights for @NiemanLab 👉 niemanlab.org/2024/07/to-pre…

Once again: Everything you think is different about the modern age is just social media.
Before social media, Ivy League kids rioted over stupid stuff, but normal people just read about it in passing in the newspaper instead of arguing about it on social media for weeks.
I think it's time to bring the old @Patriots logo back! @nytimes reported on it back in 1960. timesmachine.nytimes.com/tim…
