A few thoughts on spot sprays, inspired by three days at #Agritechnica #Agritechnica2023
Curious about experiences with spray drones this year since they became legal in Canada in June. What did we learn?
Autonomous spray drone loading might look like this prototype from #Agrispraydrones. A funnel-type landing pad places the drone precisely over a spray mix supply line. The supply line makes contact with a self-actuated valve in drone sump to fill the tank. #AIM2026
Great to be at the @mojowmojow lauch with @agrifac at #AIM2026 last night. Would you step away from an implement for a while to take care of something else nearby? Lots of ways to look at it. Admire the way this company is pushing the envelope.

Drones are definitely keeping researchers busy. But not because they're a good answer to an important need.

New 160 ft 2140 tank customer called me yesterday morning. In one day (16 hours) . He covered 2500 acres. So 156.25 acres per engine hour. This included filling, transport, folding and clean outs. What is the overall acres per engine hour on your sprayer ?
New low price! The seats are on the floor, row 16.

💧Testing your spray water source is crucial before use but lab results can be overwhelming.
This guide simplifies managing high salinity, pH imbalances, and other water quality issues.

So IMO Tom is correct that when talking about mutations sublethal doses is less of a concern. However, there is growing concern about sub lethal doses increasing development of metabolic resistance. The other issue for me with sublethal doses is it means the plant doesnt die…
Mike, I know I'm being pretty hard on you for this. But it's wrong to think that using finer sprays will solve weed control problems. That approach instead creates more serious issues that affect agriculture as a whole.
Replying to @nozzle_guy
Ya. I was always of the same thinking before 10 inch spacing and reduced boom heights.
Then I started to notice over the years the kochia on headlands. Everyone reducing pressure to reduce drift with course droplets on headlands. Then baby kochia survives. How can you control drift with course droplets but also control baby kochia with the fine hairs that need fine droplets without using a residual ?
Ask this question often and no one has a great answer. Would you rather have drift control or perfect coverage ? It’s always a mix of both. Never perfect on either.

The holiday break offers a great opportunity to step back and learn something new. Take a few minutes to watch our new video on targeted herbicide application technologies and learn what drives herbicide savings in the field. @WiscWeeds

Update: Genetic testing identifies Group 14-resistant kochia at 13 more sites (so far) across the Canadian Prairies and in all three Prairie Provinces. Stay tuned for complete updates this fall/winter…
Is your kochia Group 14-resistant? Find out for free! Help us validate our new genetic test by submitting leaf tissue. This year we have an open call for testing Group 14 resistance in kochia across AB/SK/MB. Contact me for a free sample submission kit.
