Human brain is even more complex than we thought.
New MIT study finds hidden language network in the human brain.
“Actually, researchers identified 17 additional brain regions involved in language processing. 👀”
“This study analyzed fMRI data from 772 people and found 17 brain areas outside the brain’s traditional ‘core’ fronto-temporal language network that responded to both written and spoken language.”
“These newly identified language-responsive regions include areas around the temporal poles, medial frontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and cerebellum.”
“5 of the 17 additional regions were found in the cerebellum, a brain structure traditionally associated mainly with movement and coordination.”
“Researchers also compared language responses with a demanding non-linguistic spatial working-memory task in about 490 participants.”
“Most of the newly identified regions showed greater selectivity for language than for general cognitive demands, suggesting they are not simply activated because the task is difficult.”
“Yet the researchers still don't know exactly what each of these 17 regions contributes to language.”
“The entire extended language-selective network still accounts for less than 5% of the brain’s gray-matter volume.”
More hidden mysteries will open up soon!
