1/Our paper @NeuroCellPress "Interpreting the retinal code for natural scenes" develops explainable AI (#XAI) to derive a SOTA deep network model of the retina and *understand* how this net captures natural scenes plus 8 seminal experiments over >2 decades sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

If an alien visited and gave us this shape as a gift, a few months ago we might not have understood what it meant, but now we know it’s an advanced technology – at Poplar, London

awesome work with fascinating results for RGC classification work, looking forward to diving into the details
Why do we need SO many cell types in the retina? Efficient coding theory can begin to answer that! I am happy to announce that my new work “Efficient coding, channel capacity and the emergence of retinal mosaics” with @GregDField & @jmxpearson is accepted to #NeurIPS2022! more👇

Embryonic retinal waves! In new study led by superstar student @CVoufo, @AndyQuaen and Ben Smith, a team led by @atiriac1, we describe waves at early stages of development – long before proper neural circuits are present in the retina. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

New preprint from my lab from the Twitterless, but amazing students Sylvia Durian and Mark Agrios: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… Some tonically firing neurons are "bursty" while others spike more regularly. This is true in the retina as well. But why? 1/5

1/ Can A.I. do our literature reviews for us? Stop everything and try elicit.org, an amazing new tool that uses large language models to answer research questions via empirical research- in the video below I ask it "Does social media negatively impact mental health?"

This was a wonderful collaboration with @nymarklab. I learned so much about RPE. Fascinating and electrically active cells! Julia Fadjukov and @SophiaWienbar figured out how to patch them in the intact monolayer in a mouse eye!
Cells in #retinalpigmentepithelium are coupled thru Cx43-based gap junctions. Fadjukov, @nymarklab @SchwartzLabNU et al show that #gapjunctions AND Cx43 #hemichannels make substantial contributions to the input resistance of these electrically active cells bit.ly/3J4CnAT

Excited and proud to share my postdoc work out @nature today: go.nature.com/3pscOlX. It all started as a conversation on a balcony many years ago with @zmainen on the mysteries of olfaction and spatial cognition 👃🧠🚀 Video by @Neuro_CF AV team 👉youtu.be/BunEBiU3MO0 1/n

1/ People study medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) because of its key role in navigation and memory. In our new paper we build neural network models that explain the full diversity of neural responses in MEC. To appear as a #NeurIPS2021 Spotlight! Tweetprint below 👇🧠
