I’m not a Zionist bc I’ve always been anti nationalist and politically Zionism is Israeli nationalism But if Zionism is racism, then so is Irish nationalism (and Scottish and Welsh, too) I mean, if it’s only Jewish nationalism you’ve branded racist be honest, you’re the racist

"Here's our offer: We'll slaughter 1,200 of your people in a day in an unprovoked onslaught. 800 civilians of all ages will be butchered indiscriminately in their homes, in their beds, or in the midst of a peacenik rave. We will rape some women and mutilate others. We will kill your children and pillage your houses. When we leave, we'll also kidnap a couple hundred of your people, including babies and elderly. Then we'll offer to give you back those hostages. In return, you do nothing. Deal?"
In October 2023, Hamas offered to release all civilian hostages if Israel promised not to invade Gaza. Netanyahu rejected it. Some of us noted this at the time; establishment media did not, being too busy spreading pro-genocide atrocity propaganda about Hamas raping women and beheading babies. The only open question is whether Hamas asked for anything at all. Qatari PM Mohammed al-Thani says Hamas agreed to free the hostages without conditions. Mossad chief David Barnea insists Hamas "set unacceptable conditions, such as halting the IDF's incursion into Gaza and new rights for worshippers on the Temple Mount." Correct: because the natives had dared to resist their occupiers, it was unacceptable to stop Israel from destroying Gaza, or from denying Palestinians access to one of Islam's holiest sites. A senior Israeli military official now tells Haaretz that when the Hamas offer reached the military, it was ignored: "To be honest, the issue of the hostages was not seriously on the agenda at this stage, and no one at the military or political level was open to discussing the proposal." Antony Blinken was told of the Hamas offer directly, and rejected it too. "Israel is still under attack, and there's no one to talk to," he told the Qatari PM. This is the same Blinken who would soon claim that if Hamas freed the hostages, "this could end tomorrow." That was ghoulish on its own terms, endorsing mass murder as the means to an "end." It also wasn't honest, which for Blinken was the default. Former CIA chief William Burns now says: "The basic problem was that Hamas was looking for a 'permanent end to the conflict,' as they called it." Yes. And the Biden team pretended Hamas was the obstacle, to help Israel put a permanent end to Gaza as a society and to Palestinians as a people seeking self-determination.

This is your house built on the ancestral homeland of the Duwamish There are only 700 left alive today. Most live in poverty As a settler, have you considered selling your house & donating your $25m fortune to them in the name of equality? Or is that just required of Israelis?
Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial.

It’s irrelevant what antizionism means to you. Antizionism expelled 850,000 Jews deliberately as an act of racist discrimination and committed a cultural genocide of Jews in the Soviet Union. Antizionism is historic discrimination.

Mahmoud, your grandparents were displaced not because of zionism, but because of antizionism. Arab leaders could’ve accepted partition (zionism). Instead, they waged an annihilationist war against the Jews (antizionism). Your family was displaced because Arabs lost that war.
Micah, your Zionism comes at the expense of Palestinian lives. So it's irrelevant what Zionism means to you or to other Jews around the world, or how you feel about it. To me and to every Palestinian, Zionism is the expulsion of my grandparents from their home in Tiberias. It's the killing of over 100,000 people. It's the daily humiliation that decides whether Palestinians eat, move, or live. That is what Zionism means to us, every single day. Some folks go out of their way to separate the Jewish people from the State of Israel so that Israel's crimes aren't pinned on Jews (and they shouldn't be!). Yet somehow you insist on conflating the two.

I have practised M&A and corporate law for more than seven years, so I want to explain why Mark Ruffalo’s comments about the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger bother me beyond the obvious politics. Paramount Skydance has agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in an approximately US$110 billion enterprise-value transaction. The consideration is cash. The financing package involves tens of billions of dollars of equity and debt. The transaction has cleared merger-control review in multiple jurisdictions and is now being challenged by a coalition of U.S. states on antitrust grounds. There are completely legitimate reasons to debate a deal of this scale: market concentration, competition, pricing power, editorial independence, potential job losses, the leverage being incurred, and the concentration of voting control after closing. Mark Ruffalo instead told his millions of followers: “This is the company that Larry Ellison is using to fund his son David’s Warner Bros. acquisition.” He was referring to Oracle. He then claimed Oracle’s “really profoundly scary technologies” would “most likely be merged into one of the largest media conglomerates in the world and one day used on you,” before linking the entire transaction to what he describes as Israel’s “genocide” and “apartheid system.” But Oracle is not being merged into Paramount. Oracle is a separate publicly traded corporation. The acquisition is being financed through a combination of debt and new equity financing, including a substantial cash investment by the Ellison family trust. That trust holds significant Oracle stock, which forms part of the assets supporting its funding commitment. But Oracle itself is not a party to the merger, its shares are not part of the consideration paid to WBD shareholders, and its technology, contracts and operations are not being transferred to Paramount. Paramount does maintain commercial arrangements with Oracle, including cloud and software agreements. Those related-party relationships are disclosed in Paramount’s SEC filings. A supplier relationship is not the same thing as Oracle being folded into the media company. This is where the rhetoric becomes troubling. Ruffalo’s story is essentially this: a Jewish billionaire and his son are accumulating enormous control over the media; their wealth is connected to Israel; a prominent Jewish-Israeli executive at a company in their orbit possesses frightening technology that supports Israel; and somehow that technology and power will migrate into the media conglomerate and may eventually be “used on you.” That construction has an extremely old pedigree: Jewish money, Jewish control of media, secret or frightening technological power, Israel, and a warning that the machinery will eventually be turned against the audience. Importantly, Ruffalo did not need any of this to oppose the transaction. He could have discussed competition, jobs, or whether one family should hold this much voting power over a major media conglomerate. Paramount’s own filings state that following closing, the Ellison family and RedBird will remain the sole holders of its voting shares. That is a perfectly legitimate concentration-of-control issue. Ruffalo responded that criticizing Netanyahu, Israel, or a military technology contract is not antisemitic. Of course it isn’t. But that is also not the criticism being examined here. Antisemitism has never required someone to announce “I dislike Jews.” Generally, it operates through stories about what Jews supposedly do: control institutions, manipulate governments, dominate finance or media, operate through hidden networks, and deploy extraordinary power against everyone else. As an M&A lawyer, there are dozens of serious questions one can ask about a US$110 billion merger. “The Jewish founder’s other company supports Israel, therefore its scary technology is going to become part of this media empire and could eventually be used against you” is not one of them.

“I’m not anti-Semitic. I just conflate a Jewish family’s attempt to buy Paramount with genocide.”
The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.  Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life. This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.  Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

“That’s different.” No. That IS socialism. It is the erasure of meritocracy. That is the entire purpose of socialism. That our world stop organizing around merit, effort, or individual creation and instead apply one standard baseline to all—from which nobody can deviate. That’s why it failed every time it was attempted. Because humans are hardwired to self-actualitize. It is the highest human purpose, under Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In other words, socialism violates our human coding. If you don’t understand this, you don’t understand socialism.
They’re all for socialism until they’re asked to apply that same concept to their grades.. Funny how that works. Watch this.

My most conservative position, apparently, is that being forced to pretend belief in things that deeply violate your conscience and sense of truth as a condition of participating in society is an extremely big deal -- for reasons George Orwell explained better than I can
in my profession i literally listen to stuff that isn't true all the time. i am not saying the DEI seminars were a great thing, but conservatives must literally be the most fragile snowflakes imaginable if they suffer psychological traumas from this.

When my son was 16, him and three of his friends thought it would be funny to steal one single can of beans from a convenience store so they could make it explode in a bonfire. They got arrested for stealing. They each had to meet with a social worker, and complete some writings on why stealing is bad. They also were each given a $100 fine. My son didn’t have his own money at the time so the court gave him the option to pay the debt by doing community service at the county animal shelter. We chose the community service option for him, because as his parents we were not about to pay his debt for him. He happily did his community service. My son and his friends likely will never steal again. They learned a very valuable lesson that week. YOU DONT TAKE THINGS THAT AREN’T YOURS, BECAUSE THAT IS WRONG!!!
No one should be arrested—much less jailed—for stealing a tube of toothpaste. Incarceration separates people from their jobs, support services, & loved ones. It perpetuates cycles of poverty & crime. That’s a fact, no matter how much fear mongering the right wing media does.

So @NYMag has issued a statement in response to the fact that their latest issue is filled with Jewish erasure, genocide inversion, and rabid antizionist vitriol. It’s just as lame as you’d expect it to be: “Our latest cover story is an exploration of a New York subculture that is making its presence felt, both culturally and politically, in new ways over the last few years,” the statement read. “As with other communities forged by common experiences of conflict, there is an irreducible political dimension to any coverage of this subject. We have endeavored to capture the tensions and live debates that exist within these communities, including how they relate to Israel. We are aware of the wide range of responses to the piece, including critiques from some in the Jewish community. We take these comments seriously, and, as always, we welcome and acknowledge good faith discussion and criticism about our journalism.”
New York Magazine is facing criticism over its new “Habibi City” issue celebrating New York’s growing South Asian and North African cultural scene, with several prominent voices objecting to the package’s treatment of Jewish and Israeli identity. The centerpiece article was criticized for grouping Zionism with “xenophobia” and “Islamophobia,” while another story in the package – a feature about Middle East cuisine – referred to Israel as “the land mass currently called Israel.” More: thewrap.com/media-platforms/…

BREAKING: The Eurovision is changing the rules, again… When a NYT Eurovision investigation found that Europeans voted for Israel they cut the public's votes in half. Then brought the juries votes back, and decided maybe it would be best if we competed with no flags at all. Today, they added a new rule: a winner in a “sensitive geopolitical situation” is automatically barred from hosting. When Ukraine won mid-invasion, the EBU asked the BBC to host in Ukraine’s name. That win was honored. When Israel came in second at the last Eurovision, the network panicked and rewrote the rules. Every rule is rewritten the moment we might win under the old one. It's nothing more than a blatant attempt to keep the Jewish state out of sight. That’s the NYT investigation they’ll never write.

Really curious why the @oxfordunion has still not released the debate with myself, @einatwilf @henmazzig and @avimayer. For weeks we have tried to be in touch with them and been told a variety of things about “release forms” (which all of us signed and submitted on site) and all kinds of claims about how and when they will post our debate on Israel. In person, we were told 2-3 weeks. It’s now been 2 months. Most debates from the same term have been published yet ours still hasn’t. Hard to believe that’s a coincidence.

What’s likely? That all your totally normal liberal Jewish friends suddenly “love genocide” or that Israel’s Islamist neighbors bent on its annihilation used propaganda to paint Jews as uniquely evil, literally the exact playbook every Jew-hating society has used for millennia?

This leaves such a nasty, sickly taste. It is very strange how a celebration of the wondrous delicious eclectic scene of Arab, Iranian, Palestinian, Middle Eastern food and culture - something delightful and positive about New York life and indeed about the MIddle East itself - can be turned into a screed of hate bigotry ignorance and - tellingly - power superiority over other cultures. It is interesting too how what presents as the activism of cultural kindness is actually rather poisonous. This magazine is already notorious for this and one wonders if that is what attracted its new owner James Murdoch to this once fun groundbreaking mag @NYMag or whether he will urgently wish to change its darkening tone....
These days, it feels very different to be Arab, or Iranian, or Muslim in New York. Over the past decade, a new generation of artists, chefs, comedians, designers, and others have built unprecedented cultural and political capital. Together, they’re what you might call a *scene.* Where the diasporas once seemed siloed, the new Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) scene is increasingly united across identities — Iraqi, Yemeni, Egyptian, Sudanese, Mauritanian, Afghan — and bound together by shared values. It was born out of the pain of the genocide in Gaza, which has led many young people to search for community in the city and build it where it didn’t exist. They found it at protests and in bars and cafés, at comedy shows and clothing pop-ups and fundraisers that turned into all-day hangs. And they found it in the election of the city’s first Muslim mayor and in the Syrian American First Lady. Our latest issue is an attempt to capture the people and places who are defining this era. Explore this special SWANA edition, including a dispatch from its thriving party circuit, a report on how the Middle Eastern restaurant scene has evolved, and more: nymag.visitlink.me/PlEQhP
