After a decade of investing, I noticed the best founding teams all share the same pattern. I call it The Talent Arbitrage—a framework for understanding why some teams build enduring companies. Take the quiz to find your archetype: maplevc.com/talent-quiz

Confusing vision and a dream is one of the most common ways early founders end up lost. @jedgar wrote about what a great pitch actually shows and why "we'll iterate" is a red flag dressed up as humility. maplevc.com/blog-john-edgar-…

Product is a byproduct of business, and ya best not be forgetting that.

Goals are not things you set. The Oxford English Dictionary’s first citation is from John Palsgrave’s "L’esclarcissement de la langue francoyse" (1530): "Gol of a sportrynge felde.”  Goal names the pair of boundary posts that complete a playing-field or running course. The second occurrence appears in William Forrest’s Pleasaunt Poesye of Princelie Practise (1548), again meaning the finish line in a race. By the later sixteenth century the sense had generalized to “the point or line which a ball, puck, or runner must reach to score,” and from there to “a score itself”. You don't have the goal till you score a goal, so: figure out the score you want, then get to practicing. 0-1

If you back a founder who goes to "game nights", go ahead and write that investment to zero. IF BILL GATES HAD TAKEN TIME OFF TO PLAY GAMES, WE'D STILL BE WAITING FOR WINDOWS XP RIGHT NOW. GET BACK TO WORK.
If you backed a founder who prefers trivia night to poker night, go ahead and write that investment to zero.

You're standing there nodding along. Everything they're saying sounds so right. You smile. Genius you think. This advice is amazing. Why didn't I think of this sooner...? It sounds so easy, you think. ... anyway, that's what the guy on shark tank thinks they say. Unless you know what someone has done to know what they know: presume they don't know and read your horoscope instead.
