There are a lot of reasons to be wary about a Medicare for All plan: 1. The cost... people will point out that total healthcare spending is projected to go down, but it's not so simple to "move" the money that's spent in the private market today into government coffers to spend on M4A. It's logistically difficult but moreso it's politically difficult. People don't like taxes more than they don't like paying their employer for a benefit. There will also be people who pay more in this new tax than they paid on their old employer plan, they won't be happy either. 2. A main reason that overall costs would be projected to be lower is that Medicare has WAY lower reimbursement rates for providers. M4A basically represents a mass defunding of hospitals and providers. If you look at healthcare professions in other countries they are all paid way less. Big salary cuts for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, x ray techs... you get the idea... is not going to be popular. But you're forcing hospitals to take massive revenue cuts with these reimbursement rates so what else is there to do, labor is their largest expense. 3. Complete government control of what is and isn't covered, how everything is administered, etc. It's Sarah Palin's "death panels" but real this time lol. Obviously we have a ton of people on government plans already, and government run healthcare is fine if it's run by competent people who want to see it succeed and know what they are doing. The problem is that our country has a political party hell bent on making public goods and services worse and now they're full of cranks and kooks like RFK. I would much rather a system with private insurers where I can shop around vs. being forced onto a government plan run by a nutjob. 4. Most people like their current insurance plan, most people are covered by insurance, and we don't need to do this massive disruption to the system to cover the people who are currently uninsured. We can expand the safety net, offer a public option, lower the age to buy into Medicare, etc. There are plenty of "boring" reforms that would accomplish the goal of universal healthcare, they're just not as flashy or sexy as Medicare for All so a lot of people don't care because it's not actually about healthcare for them, it's about politics.

This is a huge ick for me personally but it is a good ad I think lol
As a man of faith, I pray every day. Faith is a thing there’s just too little of in Washington.

Whenever there is discourse about credit cards, insurance, 401Ks, etc on here, I am reminded that a sizable portion of the population doesn’t actually understand the world around them and think things just inexplicably happen to them

Paying property taxes in old age can be an extreme burden. To address this, we should learn from our neighbor to the North and provide the same solution. (MAID)
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

This is a very well done video. It also looks like it took a lot of effort. I don’t think I can put into words how much it accurately depicts people I fucking hate tho.

I wish people who embraced loopy crime ideas in 2019-2020 would issue groveling apologies to people who were right all along, but genuinely the most important thing about this is we have won the argument. slowboring.com/p/dont-get-co…

Matt Yglesias is 100% right, actually. The 1,500-hour pilot rule was passed after the 2009 Colgan crash. Except the captain had 3,379 hours. The first officer had 2,244 hours. It’s pure security theater that's driven up the pilot shortage & made flying more miserable for us all.

Okay but people are children who simply do not act in their own interests. So many people are obese because they refuse to eat less. They’re killing themselves slowly.
This is why we call smug liberal policies "paternalistic". Because they literally believe their fellow citizens are children who simply do not act in their own interests

this is one of those things like social media where everyone wants to be remote / on their phones 24/7 but in actuality it's bad for the soul and makes a lot people depressed even though they're addicted to the short term benefits. Getting people to acknowledge it though is like trying to get people to exercise instead of lay on the couch though, it's just not gonna work for most people
My strongest “vibes not evidence” belief is that remote work is a cancer that’s making (most) people miserable even though it seems better in the short term.

All due respect Congressman @RoKhanna -- this entire thread started with you attacking Newsom for "shilling." Sounded kind of like a personal attack to me, rather than just focusing on the positives of the ballot initiative you support. But if you are not for going after people personally, that's good news!

Translation: The President shows he’s being duped by Putin and doesn’t know who is at fault in this war. He denies what other members of his own Administration are saying about Russian aid to Iran. This will go down as a very embarrassing chapter in U.S. history. truthsocial.com/@realDonaldT…

It's really unfair to lump in teachers, who are hardworking, productive members of society, with wannabe "artists" and "activists", whose lifestyles and failed vanity projects are subsidized by their families/partners
Somehow, in certain quarters, it has come to be seen as a personal failing to devote one’s life to improving the world around you. It isn’t “downwardly mobile” to choose, after college, to be a teacher, a city councilor or an artist. It’s just a different kind of ambition.

Like the similar bar in Massachusetts that had a recent meltdown, I think this exemplifies in a nutshell what everyone knows on some level about identitarian/intersectional progressivism more broadly. That there can never be any satisfaction. You can try to create the *ideal* space and it still will not suffice. Because there is no achievable end goal. The real passion is in complaining and tearing things down. This is why this ideology should have no place in shaping our broader politics, culture, and society. They can’t even make it work in a bar that is only visited by like-minded people.
Philly opens its first women’s sports bar as the purest possible safe space—queer, BIPOC-owned, named after Marsha P. Johnson, built so nobody would ever have to beg a bartender to turn off the Phillies again. One year later the former staff declares the place wasn’t safe enough for Black, trans, and queer people. Business collapses. Owner closes the doors while announcing the city still needs more businesses exactly like this one. That’s the irony: the ideology didn’t lose to the market. It lost to itself. The safe space got canceled for insufficient safety. The solution offered for the failure is more of the same purity test that just destroyed the first attempt. Somewhere a regular bar is still showing football without holding a community tribunal over whether the bartender’s politics are pure enough to pour the beer.

🥴 JD struggles through surprisingly contentious CBS town hall 🥴 Vance faced a number of tough questions from audience members and from Tony Dokoupil during exchanges like this: JD VANCE: The biggest reason why gas prices are so high is because when Joe Biden ... DOKOUPIL: It's almost been two years. At a certain point it becomes your economy, not Biden's economy Here's a supercut of Vance having a hard time explaining the sluggish economy, Trump's corruption, why the US hasn't already won the Iran war, and more:

Okay this version of the Oval Office was a little too barren. There has to be a tasteful middle ground please.
I often think about this image. This was taken Jan 20, 2010: the day after Scott Brown won. Such an image of Trump would never be released because no such meeting would occur. Obama had a very frank discussion on what happened. Trump is incapable of such introspection.

This is correct. Impeachment is not effective unless you can get the necessary Republicans to join you. And a failed impeachment only makes the impeached president more popular. One of the toughest black pills I’ve had to swallow is that the Ukraine impeachment helped Trump and that he would have won 2020 had it not been for COVID.
Democratic socialists Darializa Avila Chevalier and Melat Kiros are skeptical about impeaching Trump. Both told @DashaBurns that any "accountability" would need to "hold his feet to the fire" and lead to "material changes." Listen to #TheConversation: politi.co/4B9muEp

I feel like disavowing terrorism every time you're asked is a much better way of disarming these questions than getting all huffy that you're being asked. You're going to get asked more and more because you keep dodging!
Q: Will you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood? El-Sayed: Yes. Why are you asking the question? Do you assume that I wouldn’t? Q: Yes, because I have not heard you disavow them yet. El-Sayed: Have you disavowed them? I have not heard you disavow them yet.
