NCHE Holds Capacity Building Workshop on Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) for Professional Bodies
The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) convened a one-day capacity building workshop for professional bodies on Competence Based Education and Training (CBET) on 30th June 2026.
While opening the workshop, the Executive Director of NCHE, Prof. Mary J. N. Okwakol, noted that the engagement came at a critical time when higher education systems globally were undergoing significant transformation. She emphasized the increasing demand for graduates who not only possess theoretical knowledge but can also demonstrate practical competences, adaptability, and innovation in real world settings.
Prof. Okwakol highlighted that NCHE developed the CBET guidelines in response to a Ministerial directive requiring all higher education institutions to align their academic programmes to CBET by the academic year 2027/2028. She further noted that this initiative is in line with Section 4(d)(ii) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, Cap 262, which mandates NCHE to consult professional bodies during the consideration of programmes for accreditation.
She informed participants that the purpose of the workshop was to present a template on CBET standards that integrates key components of quality programme design. The template was also intended to promote strong engagement with professional bodies, whose constructive feedback would be instrumental in refining and enriching the framework.
Prof. Okwakol reaffirmed NCHE’s commitment to promoting excellence, quality assurance, and continuous improvement in higher education.
The workshop attracted representatives from various professional bodies, including:
i. Architects Registration Board
ii. Engineers Registration Board
iii. Law Council
iv. Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda
