Through struggle and discipline, persistence and faith, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped move this country forward. As we honor his legacy today, let’s remember the lesson he taught us: that even in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can help change it. In honor of #MLKDay, I hope you’ll do what you can in your community to create a better future for us all.

Somehow missed this. It’s not just Manhattan: Queens, with 47.5% foreign born, is the 4th-safest large county in America bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

So put your shoulder to an oar! Help us power the boat of civilization through the rapids of climate change. All of humanity shares the same boat, and you have the opportunity to make your own unique and valuable contribution to the effort (try the @KHayhoe suggestions!) 25/25

This year is not about seeking mandates for specific policies.
It's about saving rule of law, democratic norms, and independent institutions — amplifying transparency, restoring checks & balances, fighting extremism in all forms.
Forget that to our nation's peril.

Today I'm joined by economics journalist @EdConwaySky to focus on the six essential resources that underpin our modern economies – sand, salt, iron, copper, oil, and lithium - and the environmental and human costs of extracting them.

This story is Big Real Estate / @REBNY propaganda. For decades, city administrations have helped developers reduce the number of subsidized rentals in expensive neighborhoods, because that is where they can charge the highest rents or sales prices. 1/

Flaco the Eurasian Eagle-Owl after finishing his takeout 🐀 dinner (caught elsewhere and carried over) late Tuesday night by Columbus Avenue and 82nd Street. After resting to digest, he flew west for an early-morning hooting session. 🦉 ❤️ 👑

7k acres for parking. 13k acres for roads. 12k acres for buildings. If there is a war on parking then the parking is winning. kdvr.com/news/local/war-on-p…

I can not stress enough this point:
Literally every last person in the United States who complains about how “crowded” our cities are, is talking about cars.
America is not crowded, anywhere. Half the land in our cities is four-lane roads and parking lots!!!!!!!!!

From living in a tiny enclosure to ruling the entire Upper West Side in less than a year. Flaco the Eurasian Eagle-Owl hooted from atop this water tank on Monday night, near Riverside Drive and 90th Street. 🦉 ❤️ 👑

The gist of this excellent thread is that we should offer incentives for ecological restoration that turn opponents into enthusiastic participants. I agree!
I would just add the rewilded lands needn’t be outdoor museums: they can offer abundant foraging & much else for humans

The largest intact Roman mosaic floor discovered in Turkey, dating back to the sixth century, is a remarkable find. The mosaic, found in Antakya, covers an impressive 1200 square meters and features unique geometric shapes and non-repeating figures, likely designed for a public space.
The mosaic has a rippling effect caused by earthquakes in 526 and 528 AD, but it does not create the impression of a giant blanket. Despite the earthquakes, the mosaic remains intact and unbroken, a testament to its resilience and the skill of its creators.
