who pays for the automatic enrollment for utility affordability act? other ratepayers. who pays for the local solar expansion bills? other ratepayers (now 15% of your bill).
she’s part of the reason your pepco bills are high!

Wow, DC can theoretically *double* the families served by the housing voucher program. All it has to do is cut back on how exceptionally generous vouchers are.
No reason to pay $3,800/mo/1BR (!!) when we could serve 2X as many families by renting average apts
Today in Capital Commonsense! @kevincorinth has a commonsense reform to cut the exceptionally high payment standard for housing vouchers, allowing D.C. to serve many more families. The current standard:
Studio—$3,652
1 BR—$3,768
2BR—$4,200
3BR—$5,301

absolutely insane the rent standards, designed by people with zero concept of tradeoffs. dc in a nutshell.

The greatest mistake of modern America was failing to continue building housing in order to satisfy those who already had theirs.

I’d prefer stuff like this (alongside some interior green space). I can’t think of a worse place for a golf course. Use the land to its full potential.

What about, and hear me out. It continues to serve as a golf course and a public park. Almost like it has been for 100 years.

It’s a shame that this exceptional piece of waterfront land in our nation’s capital has been and will continue to be squandered as a golf course. A better use would be a nice park that everyone could enjoy. Or maybe a mix of housing and parkland.
the blurred map is east potomac park: the worst people are focused on creating more golf courses.

There are a lot of things the District could do to make biking safer, helmet laws are not one of them.
Helmets protect you if you fall off a bike, not if a car or e-bike traveling at 30+ mph hits you. Helmet companies stress this.

4/ We need stronger helmet laws and stricter rules for e-scooter and e-bike operation. Bike share and scooter companies have a real responsibility to better police who uses their products. Free helmet programs should be more frequent and easier to access. Residents shouldn't have to walk into a police station to get one. And we need more bike lanes that actually connect.

Talarico is single-stair-pilled!?
LET’S GOOOOOOOO!
“Our outdated building codes don’t allow for single-stair housing which is smaller apartment complexes, condos, it’s a great entry point for home ownership.
I worked with Republicans across the aisle. We repealed that outdated regulation.” @jamestalarico

NEW from me is a major Brookings Institution study, “The Progressive Case for Social Security and Medicare Reform."
It argues that refusing to reform benefits would radically redistribute income *upwards* from working families to wealthier seniors. 🧵

Too many advocates, not enough economists.
Here's the list of 21 expert witnesses (spread out over 4 panels) & 2 government witnesses who were invited to testify at the DC Council's Committee of the Whole 10am public hearing tomorrow on "Revenue Proposals for the Fiscal Year 2028 Budget": lims.dccouncil.gov/Hearings/…

DC doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem.
Bad problem to have in a jurisdiction where you can move a couple miles away and save money.
I moved full-time to DC and now that I’m a resident my paycheck gets cut $500/mo to additional taxes for worse services.
This framing frustrates me. We should and do have a progressive tax system in D.C. The Council and Mayor have raised a lot of revenue over the last decade.
To get beyond a soundbite that doesn't grapple with reality, here's some reading:

dc’s city is too incompetent,
interventionist: regressive handouts for artisan residential solar pv (that renters pay) instead of letting the market work to get renewables.
The cost of electricity in Washington D.C. has skyrocketed, ever since the city imposed a Net Zero emissions target in 2019.
The city deliberately made itself less affordable for its residents, for no reason.

These are crimes, people who have committed 57 or 405 crimes. If they're not in jail or banned from driving in D.C. already, officials should make that a priority because they will injure or kill someone.

Red-as-Stop and Stop-As-Yield have been implemented in jurisdictions and states around the country without increasing pedestrian-cyclist accidents, with reductions in traffic crashes involving cyclists observed in some studied jurisdictions as well:

DC elected leaders could immediately give residents relief from high electricity bills by fixing DCs high solar credit cost that inflates bills. This costs DC utility customers 8-18x more than MD and VA.
Instead, 3 page bills mandating more paperwork for Pepco are touted.
DC government solar mandates are causing electric bills to soar:
“Solar mandates are adding $20 per month, or $240 per year, to every electricity bill. If left unchanged, they could hike the bill by as much as $40 per month, or $480 per year, by 2029.”

I have been very encouraged by JLG's evolution on housing messaging since the primary. She is much more direct about the need to address the crisis in our existing affordable housing stock and preserve these units. This is a great sign.
We can and we must build more homes for all of us.

ALT We will work to stabilize DC's housing market, preserve the affordable housing we already have, and address rent nonpayment while protecting tenants. We must because DC is facing real economic challenges. But we need to create the foundation for ambitious growth. Here’s how →

ALT Legalize high-density, mixed-use buildings near Metrorail and bus stops and on publicly-owned land. Legalize small apartment buildings citywide so Washingtonians have more choices and more opportunities in more neighborhoods. End parking requirements citywide, and encourage minimal parking be built in developments near Metro stations.
