look at all those trees. if i were writing a tree code i would be alerting my DOT to reclaim parking spaces and excess roadway lanes to create tree lined protected bike lanes. they add to our tree canopy, reduce emissions, and provide safety for the public.
Name the time when you were most happy to see fresh asphalt. I’ll go first.

It's time to rethink public engagement on road safety projects. Public engagement shouldn't be part of the process to decide whether a bike lane is installed, it should be a process for explaining to the community why the bike lane is important and how it will impact the street.

Worried about climate change? The single greatest threat to humanity & shared prosperity? Transportation is the 2nd largest source of emissions globally & the LARGEST source in the US. Yet a miniscule share of climate philathropy funding goes to efforts to improve public transit

No public hearing on the SPOG contract. No public hearing on the SPS school closure plan (they introduced it and adopted it at the same meeting last week). Not a good time for democracy in Seattle.
Councilmember Tammy Morales asked CM Sara Nelson to delay tomorrow's vote on the Seattle police union contract, saying there should be public hearings. Nelson seemed to say, basically, no.

About 30 percent of U.S. residents don’t have a driver’s license. So what will it take to factor them into our transportation decisions? We sat down with @AnnaZivarts, who explores that question in her essential new book, "When Driving Is Not An Option." usa.streetsblog.org/2024/05/…

My unpopular opinion is that dense, urban centers should charge the true cost of admission for free riders. No free parking. Congestion fees. Road diets. Pedestrian only streets. Force these people to enjoy the amenities on the terms of the people who actually live and work there
NIMBYism usually boils down to density free-riding—wanting to live close to desirable amenities that are sustained by population density, but not wanting any of that density to be right next to you.

Note that @NHTSAgov has *direct* control over vehicle design. If we’re getting increasingly bigger blind spots in ever-larger cars (we are) it’s because NHTSA isn’t regulating their design to ensure people outside of cars can be seen by drivers. #NationalBikeMonth
Drivers, it's critical to ALWAYS be aware who's around you, including bicyclists: 🚴 Give cyclists plenty of room. 🚴 Follow the speed limit. 🚴 Yield to bicyclists. 🚴 If you're turning right on red, look to the right and behind you.

🚨 All urbanists should care about this move to close neighborhood schools because 1⃣ Strong schools are fundamental to thriving cities 2⃣ Having schools within walking distance of students is a key part of building a #15MinuteCity, and the success of #SafeRoutesToSchools.
BREAKING: @SeaPubSchools is proposing to close 20 public schools for the 2025-26 school year. They have not yet named which schools these would be. It would potentially be the largest school closure since Chicago in 2013. seattleschools.org/board-mee…

So, since I get a lot of angry, violent drivers in my mentions thought I’d try something. Let’s say, for the sake of discussion, you drive everywhere you go, every day. One of the first things you notice is: Good lord, a ton of these other drivers are *really bad at driving.*
