Science alone will not deliver health for all. The AIDS response showed that breakthroughs only save lives when people can access them. Access to HIV medicines was not just a scientific achievement, but a political victory.
Delivering health for all requires more than innovation.
It requires people organizing, challenging unequal systems and changing the rules that stand in the way of access.

COVID exposed the same fault lines. Vaccines were developed at record speed. The science was there. The resources were there.
What was missing was the will to share the benefits of science.

Access to medicines is one of the great achievements of the AIDS response. Millions of lives have been saved because communities fought for equitable access. The stalemate on Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) in the Pandemic Agreement puts that lesson at risk.
Equity must be built into pandemic preparedness from the start, not negotiated afterwards.
#WHS2026 @WorldHealthSmt @UNAIDS
Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, has been calling for an agreement on Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS), the critical part of the Pandemic Agreement that remains unresolved.
As we continue these discussions at #WHS2026, the message remains the same: the world must learn from 30 years of the HIV response. Sharing pathogens and data must go hand in hand with equitable access to the vaccines, treatments and diagnostics developed from them.
Without agreement on PABS, the world risks being unprepared for the next pandemic.
UNAIDS will continue to push for an agreement that puts equity and access at the heart of pandemic preparedness.

UNAIDS helped found the GIPA principle, putting the meaningful involvement of people living with HIV at the heart of the HIV response.
Florence Riako Anam (@floriako), Co-Executive Director of @gnpplus, reflects on how UNAIDS has helped turn that principle into practice, supporting people living with and affected by HIV to have a voice in governance, decision-making and policy, from global to country level.

Farewell my old friend. Two days before we launched Christ’s Church of Rwanda, Tom walked in to introduce himself as our neighborhood atheist. At the time both of us had experienced 3 spine surgeries. I took that as a whisper from God. He’s been in my prayers ever since.
I always appreciated Tom’s candor, kindness, humor, and concern for his neighbors. My dad, brothers, and Tom are the only buddies God has given me who trade stories of spine surgeries and laugh. We have lost a treasure with Tom’s departure.
I trust in the resurrection, pain will cease as we walk among the beauty of God’s creation with new found joy.
God’s blessings of comfort and mercy for all who grieve Tom’s loss. Rest in peace my friend. We will meet again bbc.com/news/articles/cqlwv0…

Tom spent more time thinking about God and the problems of suffering and justice in this world than most pastors I know. Some would call that a lack of belief. I saw Tom honestly wrestling with God as the Old Testament patriarchs did

Last week at #AIDS2026, one message came through clearly: ending AIDS by 2030 is within reach, but only if we turn commitments into action.
Throughout the conference, UNAIDS called for the commitments made in the 2026 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS to become real progress for people. That means translating global ambition into laws, budgets and accountability, while ensuring no one is left behind.
Across the week, UNAIDS highlighted four priorities.
First, equitable access to innovation. Scientific breakthroughs are transforming HIV prevention, but new technologies will only change the course of the epidemic if they are affordable and accessible to everyone who needs them.
Second, communities. Again and again, the message was clear: communities are not an add-on to the HIV response, they are its foundation. Community-led organizations must be trusted, sustainably funded and empowered to lead.
Third, human rights. Ending AIDS depends on ending stigma, discrimination and punitive laws. Protecting civic space and advancing gender equality remain central to an effective HIV response.
And finally, political leadership. Parliamentarians, ministers and partners were challenged to turn commitments into implementation through stronger legislation, sustainable financing and accountability.
The week also reinforced an important lesson from the HIV response: more equitable societies are better prepared for future health threats. Discussions on pandemic preparedness highlighted that building resilient health systems requires not only science and innovation, but also trust, inclusion and action to reduce inequality.
The science exists. Communities know what works. Countries have renewed their commitments.
Now it's time to deliver.
