Durable goods price growth slowed in September, but prices are still up 4.4% this year...the biggest January–September increase in our data since 2020. One slower month is welcome. #cpi #consumerdurables #retail

August durables prices rose +0.57%, down from +0.86% in July. Growth is cooling, but it hasn't stopped. What stood out to me is where the discounts went. Back-to-school promotions were narrower than usual, concentrated in a handful of categories like TVs and monitors while most of the shelf stayed quiet. Retailers are getting selective about where they spend margin. That is the signal worth watching heading into holiday. hubs.ly/Q04wYJXb0

Expanding the mission today. OpenBrand has acquired Comperemedia from Mintel Group. Two platforms, two markets, one team behind them. hubs.li/Q04rTQZh0

Ralph McLaughlin and I are back for the Q3 State of Durables update. We spent this one digging into the Q2 macro backdrop, and the story kept coming back to energy. Back in April we said energy would drift lower, not spike. That mostly held, and we see oil settling in the $70 to $80 range. But here's what gets missed: even when energy eases, consumers don't feel it right away. Gas prices climb like a jet and fall like a parachute. That lag is why retailers leaned so hard on discounting. Memorial Day promotions held our Durable Goods CPI nearly flat in May. Then Prime Week flipped it in June, pushing the CPI up around 0.8 percent. Two events, two playbooks. One flattened inflation, the other redirected it into pricier goods. My takeaway: promotions are now central to how people actually experience inflation in durables. If energy stays contained and housing improves, 2027 might finally look like a normal year. June CPI for durables hit +0.79% MoM — up from +0.05% in May. Discount frequency rose during Prime Week, but depth barely moved. Retailers expanded what was on sale. They didn't go deeper on price. #cpi #inflation

Amazon Prime day is a full key promotional period for all retailers. Our survey tracked all four days and competing retailers were capturing shoppers the entire time. The halo effect is real. Full report dropping soon. #PrimeDay

Durable goods shoppers come to Prime Day with a plan. 40% cited deal planning as their reason for shopping. Non-durable shoppers? 11%. The consideration phase happens weeks before the event opens. Stay tuned for more insights from our Prime Day survey. #PrimeDay

Durables shoppers say they're pulling back on Prime Day spend. But consumers say one thing and buy another. We'll be tracking actual transaction data and comparing it to last year. Stay tuned. #PrimeDay

Prime Day durables shoppers aren't impulse buyers. Our survey data makes that pretty clear. We're dropping daily insights and a full recap once the survey is completed. Stay tuned. #primeday

A surprising data point from May: Consumer durable prices rose just 0.02%, despite elevated energy costs and broader inflation concerns. Aggressive Memorial Day promotions played a big role. #cpi #inflation

OpenBrand’s April CPI data: Costs are rising across durable goods, but promotions are still keeping prices relatively muted in categories like appliances. The question is how long that holds. hubs.li/Q04fSqd20 #cpi #inflation #pricing

While there has been some speculation that inflation would accelerate more significantly in March due to spiking oil prices, some of the muted rise could have been due to a barrage of discounting events at the end of the month, led by Amazon. Target alone doubled discount depth in March. Check out the full report. #cpi #inflation

The latest OpenBrand CPI shows appliance prices fell -0.25% in February, with 14 of 16 categories declining. That lines up with our earlier forecast that appliance prices would begin moderating through 2026. #cpi #economy

Inflation accelerated in January, but less than a typical January. Durable & personal goods prices rose +0.75% MoM, below the 10 year January average and consistent with normal new year price resets. #cpi

Ignoring alternative data sources (which happen to have greater data density and frequency than the traditional sources) makes no sense. The fed doesn’t have enough current pricing data to support their position that inflation is still above their target. @truflation @OpenBrandAI - Two alternative CPI sources with more granular, real-time pricing data are telling a different story.
The Fed just announced they are pausing interest rate cuts. This is absolutely insane. Inflation is 1.2% right now. Deflation is the real risk.

The OpenBrand CPI NowCast-DPG, with data updated through November 20th. The big takeaway? Significant price growth cooling, with prices up just +0.09% MO It's clear November is trending cooler, and with Black Friday and Cyber Monday still ahead of us, the month is likely to end on an even cooler note.
