🚨 We’ve now reached over 15,000 signatures on our petition! David Lammy plans to scrap trial by jury — a right that dates back to Magna Carta. We can’t let that happen. Juries are a bulwark of English liberty, particularly the right to free speech. The David Lammy of 2020 called “criminal trials without juries a bad idea.” He was right. We’re calling on the government to guarantee the right to trial by jury. Defendants who justify their actions on free speech grounds are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court without one. If you care about English liberty — especially free speech — ✍️ SIGN OUR PETITION freespeechunion.org/jury-tri…

This thread highlights a hugely important yet often overlooked point. The world doesn’t need to be the way it is today. It’s not written in stone or the natural order of things. Humans created this paradigm and we can also end it.
Ueno Sakuragi Atari was a tiny plot on an awkward back street in Tokyo with three old houses. It was supposed to become a parking lot. Instead it was renovated and turned into shops, performance spaces, bars, bakery, etc. employing a dozen people and attracting thousands weekly.

Having war criminals coming out and condemning other war criminals for PR stunts means absolutely nothing to me. From Trump, to Mattis, to Obama, To Comey, to Bolton - they ALL need to be prosecuted for war crimes.

Three days of looting and the military comes out. 10 years of non-stop Wall Street looting and not a single bank executive in jail. That’s the real face of your country right there.

To the person who has just messaged on Facebook to say "You're not socially distancing on Walks Around Britain... I'm going to report you...", We hope you'll be doing the same for EVERY OTHER TV SERIES EVER MADE BEFORE MARCH 2020... Jeez... some people...

"George W Bush is in the news again today, and once again it’s not for the only legitimate reason that he should ever be in the news, namely a war crimes tribunal. No, it’s because his voice was used in a cutesy feel-good video about unity during the Covid-19 pandemic."
Five Things That Are Revealed By Democrats’ Rehabilitation Of Bush 1. It shows how little Democrats care about the lives of human beings overseas. 2. It shows that Trump-era Democrats are Bush-era Republicans. medium.com/@caityjohnstone/f…

The 1st draft of the Patriot Act was rolled out a week after 9/11. Does anyone really believe they gathered all the necessary information and wrote hundreds of pages in one week from scratch? Does anyone believe there aren't pre-planned authoritarian agendas being rolled out now?

Watching the @BBC soft-sell the benefits of the surveillance state in dealing with the #coronavirus. Unbelievable.

Because they dont actually need the $! The bailout provisions should be onerous enough that only those who really really need it will take it. CEO pay capped at $100k, workers on the board, govt stake. Then see if they still want it.

Their live blogging coverage has been great but this a bit more honesty than I’m used to from a news org. ⁦@guardian⁩ and, yes, I’ve donated to them.
What you should be reading this morning
I should be qualified to comment on the covid-19 pandemic. I'm a computational/system biologist working on infectious diseases and have spent five years in a world class 'pandemic response modelling' unit. In this thread, I will summarise what I believe I (don't) know. (1/12)
