Systems, once they exist, tend to become immune to change, no matter how good the people are. People come and go, but the system remains.

I did a thing, it was so good I can’t wait to do it again.
Earlier this week, one of our Engineering Managers, Trish, ran a thought-provoking & engaging workshop for Welly's women/enby in #tech community. 😍 Thanks to everyone who came along! We loved hosting you at our office & can't wait for the next one. 🕊 #womenintech #wellington

When live gives you kids, you get to eat cake and see a whole new perspective on life.
When parenting and building software experience combines: Clients are nothing more than toddlers who are screaming about wanting a blue cup instead of red. When what they actually NEED is a nap

Anyone else consider the eternal search for a "source of truth" to be a bandaid for deeper systemic issues?
This is a tweet I still refer to often, and not just for evaluating tech/tool. Works for any decision making situation
A reasonable (according to me anyway) shorthand for evaluating a new tech/tool: 1. What problems does it solve? 2. What new problems does it create? 3. What problems does it just move around. Hints: * 3 is usually the largest group * People often confuse 3. With 1. 1/

My wife just said "if you hate everyone, you should eat something, and if you think everyone hates you, you should go to sleep" and I don't think I've heard a better life hack

So, to sum up the Supreme Court’s week: life begins at conception and ends in a mass shooting.

I care more about shipping APIs than how I have to *talk* to make it happen. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Takeaway: don’t tell women to ask for the raise, speak like a man, or other things that work for you. Women are rational, if we’re doing something weird, fix the system, not us.

Slight reframe for me. When you build anything you WILL have to rewrite some or all of it. Knowing what's most likely going to be up first for rewriting and making a plan to address is an exercise often neglected. This is the most crucial of tech debt conversations.
When you build something with a brand new technology, you’ll likely need to rewrite the whole thing a second time, with enough experience gained. Observed this many times. Turns out it’s not just me. Here’s The Mythical Man Month observing the same thing, written ~50 years ago.

Susan sums up my 2021 perfectly
2021: A year of "unbecoming" - of challenging assumptions, stepping into fear, and acknowledging fragility. Powerful growth comes from that place. It is where we tap into what matters - family, mental health, love. 2022: Let this learning keep lighting our way.
